Can I please take this opportunity to remind those people making-up hanging baskets. Please, please, do not forget to add water retaining crystals and feeding granuals to your compost. We expect these to last throughout the summer to Sept/Oct. and they need a helping hand to survive.
Many thanks, and happy gardening. May your baskets live long.

Julia Report 26 Apr 2010 16:10

Hayley, I have been doing mine over the week-end, which prompted me to make the reminder. I leave mine in the greenhouse now, until about the end of May, to make root, and get established. There is no heat over-night in the greenhouse.

AnninGlos Report 26 Apr 2010 16:33

Julia all my baskets are well established now as we have to take a chance and move them out this weekend. We did it last year and they were fine but I wouldn't risk it if I lived further north. Our neighbour looks after them but they don't take them in at all as there are too many.

Julia Report 26 Apr 2010 17:02

Ann, it is always, at this time of year, a question of 'shall I, or shan't I' when it comes to putting the baskets out. Here in Derbyshire, it can still be abit risky.
I wouldn't want my neighbour looking after mine, not when I look in her garden and see nothing but a healthy crop of Dandilions. Idle madam
LOLOL

AnninGlos Report 26 Apr 2010 17:49

Our neighbours are great Julia except they do occasionally over water them a bit. But when you think how often we are away and they never mind. We do look after theirs when they are away but that is only a couple of weeks a year.

Added by Davo From East Kent on 19/07/2005 00:01:22 Mine are looking reasonably good, however nothing like some flower arrangements we saw near Calais France last monday.

We took my distant Australian cousins, whom I met through GR, to Calais for the day. After lunch and shopping, we went for a ride through the country. We drove down to Ardres, turned left and went through Auduricq, and turned towards Gravelines, we came to a house with the small garden filled with flowers, with the centre of the main display a dog in flowers. Butterflies in flowers on the walls. In front of the field next to the house were five full size displays of horses, etc. pulling farm carts, and one display a yoke of oxen pulling a cart, all of these in various flowers. He even had hanging boxes on the fence by the river on the oposite side of the road. While we were looking and taking photos, the owner came out and we asked how many hours it took him. He said 'Hundreds'.

Well worth a visit.

Ignorance is bliss - so they say (thats the bits that made me laugh the most).

I have trimmed my hanging baskets this morning as I found a few stray bits around the edges, a little pluck here and there and bobs your uncle, back to beauty. pmsl. As for troughs well, I have not filled mine for a while now, in fact I think if I check I may find a few cobwebs, best get the duster out. lol

Added by Joanne Reeder on 19/07/2005 15:18:39 My water feature is a tad rusty!!!!

Added by Nana Anna on 19/07/2005 15:49:24 So Ben, how big is your water feature and do you have problems with it scaling up?

Anna

Added by Ben Nevis on 19/07/2005 15:57:37 nana anna well according to my neighbour its the biggest one she has seen but i am sure she is just being nice, if i turn up the pressure it goes over in to her garden thats when we fall out its not good for her husband to see i once reached her hanging baskets with it boy was she a happy bunny

Added by Nana Anna on 19/07/2005 16:06:20 ...and what do you do with it in the winter to stop it freezing up (I wouldn't like the pump to break!)? It's difficult to get all the water out, often have to help hubby give it a good shake!!

LOL!
Anna

Added by Ben Nevis on 19/07/2005 16:12:55 extra cladding nana anna its never frozen yet, a hot water bottle round it when it dose freeze up, my neighbour is very helpfull and sometimes holds it for me while i get it warmed up.

Added by Sally Has Senior Moments on 19/07/2005 16:12:56 I have no problems turning mine on - it's the turning off that is a little tricky.
Sally

Added by Buttercup Fields on 19/07/2005 16:14:17 Sally!!!!! You are getting as naughty as the others!!!!! LOL BC

Added by Nana Anna on 19/07/2005 16:16:07 ..and how old is your pump? Just wondering how long they last!

Anna

Added by Ben Nevis on 19/07/2005 16:16:26 i know what you mean sally i say i know what you mean sally it can sometime take a good few hours to get it turned of

Added by Ben Nevis on 19/07/2005 16:19:34 i dont know nana but i find if you keep it working and in good order it will last for ever, sometimes a little lubrication helps

Added by Nana Anna on 19/07/2005 16:23:14 What do you suggest - WD40?

SpanishEyes Report 10 May 2011 16:37

Having got my garden into good order re cutting down fir trees, revived the Roses, they are in fantastic bloom now, the fruit trees all showing sings of good crops, I am now thinking about vegetables.

I cannot do anything for the next wek or two, as we will be away, but woul like to do more than grow potatoes,
Any help etc will be welcome. There are only two of us, we enjoy most veg, and live by the sea, we also live in Spain half way between Barca and Valencia. Also we have very strict rules here about organic food, the professionals for example are not allowed to use anything which could damage the organic food reputation. The organic food is excellent re taste but only lasts a day or two.

Now I am not going to be here for about 8 days so please do not think that I am not needing your help

Thanks

Bridget

We do have a very good watering system. :-)
