Oh dear Jane , that's not good ,poor Chris he doesn't want that so near Christmas !!

Freezing well out there now ,just let Toby out for a wee, and he was out and back in mighty quick !!

I needed petrol ,and the queue was almost out on the road.So I waited until I picked Hannah up and went back.Nearly all the unleaded had gone!!.The girl on the till said she had only been there for half an hour and had already taken £1,000.
No Pasta tonight.I changed my mind.It is sausages, savoury rice, bubble ans squeaky stuff and peas.
It was -5 just now.

All I can say David is that things can only get better! Things should hopefully pick up after xmas.

Your quotas of veg sound just fine for me Frank.....can I book a place!!!! lol I put any veg leftovers with soup or in an omelette.

Liz, I hope you get a bit of peace while your neighbours are away!! What a pain they are!!

Jane, our local paper headlines are about flu sweeping the county. I hope you don't catch it for xmas.......put a mask on him!!!!

I think I shall get my xmas veg from the farm shop next week.....no big queues there and sometimes cheaper than the supermarket. I did some bread sauce this afternoon and froze it.

Between us this afternoon we cleared the food cupboards and got rid of out of date stuff, then we cleared and sorted the indoor f/freezer and the freezer in the garage and put the xmas stuff all in the indoor one. Plenty of room now for the xmas stuff and any leftovers over xmas. I did a little table centre out of cream roses and burgundy carnations and went in the garden for some greenery. Got outside and remembered we'd dug most things up last summer! lol The gravel was frozen solid and all I found that wasn't covered in frozen snow was a bit of Holly. I might go round the lanes tomorrow to find a bit of conifer!!

Mandy, that is just how my OH is......but all the time..... now he is here most of the time.....always thinking about something to eat or drink!! lol It was good having him here this morning though, he got up, cleared the car and took me to the hospital. He went to read his book this evening and fell asleep. lol

They were selling boxed CD sets, 2 for £8 at Sain*bury's today and I found a Motown one and one of the Who so they should be good and I'll be reliving my past over xmas, bopping about like Jane. lol

I need to have a clearing out of cupboards and things that have been lingering in the freezer for too long. It's amazing the things you find lol
My Brother in Law has gone to London to pick up Matthew from Uni today. He was going to go tomorrow ,but probably wouldn't get there.Hannah was due to go for a meal tonight after work with her collegues (sp) but they cancelled because of the heavy snow that was coming down.
Your table decoration sounds lovely Ann.I'm afraid I am not that clever or adventurous .I need to give the 'posh' cutlery a good clean for Xmas Day.I will do that tomorrow.
I remember Mum in the days leading up to Christmas spending hours ,making ,the cake ,the pudding, mince pies and all sorts of other goodies. No ready made party food in those days.
Our sideboard would be covered in tin foil, with all sorts of things spread out.
Do people still buy those boxes of Dates with those little sticks to dig them out of the box.I used to love them ,and then leave the sticky stones lying around lol.I always got told off for that.

All the Christmas Goodies it really takes me back to when I was little!!! mind you, a lot of them I didn't like!! but my parents were very keen! sugered Almonds, dodgy, Newberry Fruits a definite NO! NO! Orange and Lemon slices, yuk! same with marshmallows and Turkish Delight! As for Dates, you're kidding!!!! we used to have them for breakfast at School, and believe me they were foul!!! mind you, I think they were very old as hardly anybody liked them and they were trotted out again and again! Our breakfast usually consisted of Cereal, or Porridge served from an enormous cauldron, always tepid and ALWAYS lumpy! followed by bread a knob of butter and marmalade, margerine for when the butter ran out, Cuppa tea from HUGE teapots, VERY stewed!! boiled eggs on Sunday, nicknamed 'bullets for obvious reasons! these days,of course, this would be completely unacceptable, but we were 'war babies' and used to a bit of hardship!!! That place! the beds were SO hard and the building SO cold in winter, that we wore bedsocks!! BUT, complain at your peril!!! No one, but no one (parents included!!) were even remotely interested in moaning!!

Jane

Jane Report 17 Dec 2010 22:07

I am on a hunt tomorrow for Orange and Lemon slices.I always bought them when the children were younger ,but don't think I have seen them for a while.
Turkish Delight is always a favourite here.Newberry Fruits remind me of my Nana.I loved the liquid centre.
There was something mum made in my early teens .It was like a cakey thing made in two cleaned out baked bean tins.It was chocolately, biscuity, and just Yummy.
Chris and Hannah have gone to bed ,Chester is crashed out on the settee(he has been out for his last wee wee).I am just waiting for the sheet in the tumble drier to go back on the spare bed and I will then be gone lol
So I will say Night Night now xx

Morning from a snow bound Mel. We have a white out!! well nearly.

Took some pics out the window. Have made another 4 wreaths yesterday as the shop asked for them for the weekend. I told them I might mnot be able to get them down there if it snowed and I was right!!!!

Have'nt caught up with yesterdays posts yet. Just going to do that.

8.50am.

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 18 Dec 2010 09:30

Oh I have'nt bought orange and lemon slices this year!!! We always had them at this time of year when I was young. I used to like to have the middle one that was round and never ate the rind on the slices until I was older!!!

Mewberrry fruits we had too and dates and figs. Dates always had to be a special make and they used to come in a wooden box which you could make things out of when the dates were gone and mum had washed the sticky box. I used to ask mum why the date stick had nobbles on it all the way up and dad said that it was like how they grow on the palm tree.

Also had a glass bowl of mixed nuts in their shells, in fact the bowl is still in the lounge to this day as mum used it for her fruit bowl.

Marzipan fruits too but mum used to make them. When I was older I used to help her and I liked making the strawberries and colouring cocktail sticks green and cutting out crepe paper frills for the tops and then colouring the berries and rolling them in sugar. We would make bananas, oranges and apples with a clove in the end for the flower bit that you get in the apples, and even very small bunches of grapes and pears with a clove stalk stuck in the top.

Mum would also do stuffed date by taking out the stone and putting a blanched almond inside and rolling them in dessicated coconut and putting them in frilly little paper cases.

We always had a jar of ginger in syrup on the Christmas table too as grandad liked to have a piece after his dinner.

Everyone had a glass of drink and mine was a very tiny little glass on a stem with a small drop of port in it. Dad did'nt drink but always had a glass of Crabbbies Green Ginger Wine with his dinner at Christmastime.

Morning Mel.
No not snowed in here.We haven't had anymore. The sky looks full, but I don't know if we will actually get any.Chris says 3pm it will snow !
It looks like James may have loads in Kent.I hope he can get home on Monday.
I feel so sorry for the thousands and thousands of people who won't be able to get to families or away on their hols for Xmas.

I just got a couple of pics of the squirrel eating the birds coconut suet.I don't know how well they will come out as it blends in a bit with the tree lol
