Midwife came today, was due to, she was happy that Merryn wasn't in constant pain, that she was sleeping, her tummy soft, so no blockage. Put her down as one of those who don't have to "go" that often.

Advise was to carry on the boiled water, maybe with 2/3 drops of orange juice in it, and to carry on the clockwise massage.

I guess after two very regular lads it wasn't what I was expecting..........lol

Thank you All for your concerns, Jan xxxxxxxxxx

Suggesting from unqualified,,,,, someone insert anything into a new born baby's bottom would be nothing short of abuse and horrifyling !!,and could cause untold damage, should there be a medical problem.

Soap is an old wives remedy that should not be passed on to anyone, and cant belive its still practiced.!!

MrDaff

MrDaff Report 5 Jul 2010 10:03

Soap is an irritant around OUR bottoms, leave alone a tiny less than a week old baby.... I certainly wouldn't recommend it, and the hospital would do something only if it was clear a tiny baby was in distress. Of course in olden days, they gave mums to be soapy water enemas and advised soap or vaseline around and forced just inside the sphincter..... and made them sore and vulnerable to infection for weeks afterwards, so if anyone wants to go back to that barbaric practice for themselves, go ahead. But on a new born baby it would be abusive, I think, these days. That is just my opinion.

I would ask you health visitor, and go by what she says. That is what they are there for!

The only other suggestion is to continue with tiny drops of boiled water after feeds, but only because the weather has been so warm. New borns often go a few days after they have passed the first tarry stools... and as they do not take in much, just enough for their needs - it takes 3 to 5 days for proper feeding to establish, many babies will not actually feed until then.... it is why our breasts don't fill up with milk for the first few days. Nature has made it that way for a reason!! So it follows that the bowels will not begin to function properly until after that. Oh, and once established, your baby will open it's bowels at virtually every feed if breastfed... the temperature is exactly the right temperature to trigger that reaction.

So as long as he isn't in any pain and distress, then speak to your health visitor, to reassure yourself, take her advice, and try to relax. Getting worked up will also affect the milk flow.

It is so hard, especially on your first, but you will be an old hand by the time you're on the second, lol

Good luck

Love

I am glad you sad that fiona as I thought I was dreaming it. I am sure it is not unusual for breast fed babies to go a longish time without passing a 'motion'. I would worry though if she appeared to be in pain or discomfort.

Can't NHS direct advise?

I'm sorry but I truly don't think you can give a new baby the things you've suggested - sugar? prune juice? Best ask the health visitor.

I had same problem with my eldest when she was a month old. Mil told me about the soap (she was a military nurse) I didn't use it as someone else told me to put a few grains of brown sugar into the boiled water and that worked. I too was breast feeding and after the problem happened I used to drink a glass of fresh orange juice each day and that helped.
Good luck

My mother used the soap method when my brother was small, I was 5 when he was born but I bet she had used it on me and my other bro, I just don't remember.
I do remember the syrup of figs tho

I think the best thing is to ring the midwife or doctors or NHS direct.

Hope little one will be ok soon

Ooh Sandie - you've triggered a memory. Me, when I was about 5 and constipated, and my gran doing the soap trick! Not sure about a small baby though - as others have said, best to check with health visitor or surgery.

Do of course speak to the Health visitor if you're worried, but I was told, about 20 odd years ago it's true, that it's quite common for breast fed babies to go up to about 5 days without passing a motion.

My aunt is 90 and has 60 yr old twins, and a 57 yr old dau all with children of their own.
I can always remember her saying to use a little pellet of gentle soft soap up the childs bottom ! She is and always has been a very clever sensible lady.
I never had any such problem with my 2 and never used any methods but she always said it worked, but check with your health visitor/ nurse / GP first.
Good luck hope something 'happens' soon :)

How old is she?

Never have that problem with my 2. In fact, it's the opposite.
