What exactly was an Optical Turner

In the census records for the 1800's three of my husband's ancestors were described as optical turners and one was a Master optical turner. What exactly did they do? Can anyione help me on this one? |

Sounds to me as if they made the lenses for glasses and binoculars, that sort of thing. the lenses would have to have been turned to shape. |
