I stand corrected - it was 2/3 weeks ago - I checked back and it was 23' yacht and 40" plasma screen tv!

ChrisofWessex Report 4 Nov 2010 17:41

It was true Sandie and the 32' yacht (slightly damaged would do a winterproject) was the heading. I could not believe it. But in saying that a lot of charities will not accept electrical goods. Even the charity that supply furniture to homeless etc will not accept gas cookers or tvs. I know that because I offered them both.

As the idea behind freecycle is to keep good things out of landfill, it's always better to give them away. We gave away everything when we had our garden landscaped, flagstones, topsoil, wall stones, huge shed. I've also given away things like old towels, advertised them for dog use, snapped up!

No group in my area..!!..:(

Jenny ~~
It does make you wonder about shady characters, I was not looking to get something from Free-cycle.. I wanted to offer it , butI would rather donate it to charity and for them to get something out of it.

Well as there is nothing local with Free-cycle, it's Barnados , Oxfam, Tenovus or the skip !

We decided that our 5 year old dining table and 6 chairs were much to big for our small dining room. So advertised it on our local Freecycle. We got 15 requests for it, but let it go to the first email we got,.a young couple with children were absolutely thrilled with it.

But, I have since realised that there are a few shady characters who are constantly receiving all kinds of items. Eg. Why would the same person want 3 coffee making machines and 3 deep fat fryers. I am a little put off now, as I think some could be exploiting this site and selling things on at car boot sales etc. Which I think is horrendous.

I agree with Jude, you can pass on the oddest things on Freecycle. We have passed on all sorts of fish equiment, Fish, plants, trees, electrical equipment, water fountains, all sorts and even old computer magazines.
Last thing was a market stall frame.

Wow ..

I never thought of that Jude, we are about to change our bathroom completely. Hubby's idea, bath, toilet and handbasin are in excellent condition, ..he wants to change to a shower unit rather than a bath, with overhead shower, against my better judgement, he's bought everything except the shower unit and has almost re tilled the whole bathroom.
If someone can make use of it , well and good rather than it go to the tip.
It isn't something you would put up for sale.. tho it is in an excellent condition.

Hello Sandie:o)

Thanks for that:o) l work for Oxfam, so anything l don't put on freecycle l take to Oxfam.

The sort of thing people can get rid of on freecycle are....top soil, bricks, any other d.i.y things, pond plants, plants, seeds etc some allow live stock . My old bath will go on if its worth it, so there are loads of things that a charity shop can't take....well worth the look:o)

Hi Jude~~

If you or your OH are a taxpayer, even son or dau, Barnados can get the tax relief on your donations if you register with them
Having dealt with Barnados whilst working myself with the Social Security I know they do good work for unfortunate youngsters.
I believe it applies to other charities.

But I'll still check out the Freecycle site:).☺☺

Thanks Dizzie Lizzie, will try that link.

Barnados took the DVD with thanks this morning, they didn't used to take electrical goods, but have obviously changed their policy.

I'm also gutted that we skipped 3 teles in good condition, which they would have taken, all was needed was a digi box for them to be of use to someone.
My Aunt who is 90 didn't want to spend a lot on a new tele when everything went digital, so her g.dau bought her a digi box and fitted it all up for her:))
Working perfect !

What is the website for Freecycle please ..?
Ihope there is one near to me.

Tho I always donate to Barnados, I am taking a DVD tomorrow.

I was gutted when I had to take my dining chairs to the tip, cos they'd been recovered and didn't have a fir safety label on them !

I find it makes me feel good to give an item to someone who will appreciate it. besides, I don't have to pay someone to take it away, they pick up. I have made some good friends through Freecycle as well.

Jean (Monmouth) Report 29 Jul 2010 19:37

Have just freecycled to another home my much treasured knitting machine with all accessories, a ribber and lace carriage, because I cant sit comfortably at it anymore. Have now got to sort out some plants and an electric floor sweeper which is only suitable for solid floors and cord type carpet. Its efficient on those, but not on my rugs.
Have passed on a load of stuff, but never yet taken anything for ourselves. Its a glorified jumble sale costing nothing!

I use freecycle a lot got local one and coventry one as we are so near there, get lot for school PTA on there as well and give a lot away as well rather than throw it away.

Got a lovely recliner from it hubby calls it his magic chair as he is soon asleep in it and also got a high backed orthapedic chair off it whcih is good as well.

Deanna Report 29 Jul 2010 10:34

Hi all,
Liz searched for a recliner chair for me on that site when my own broke down...
She found one just up the road from me... but my son bought me one for Mother's Day.... what Liz now calls ... 'my blue throne'...
I have never been on the site but I think it is an amazing idea, and we really should swap things which are still good.
Beats throwing a good item away, often unused.
Enjoy your footie games with the family Jude.
