I would say that it is only to the perpetrators that violence is seen as protection Mel.

FootieAngel

FootieAngel Report 11 Aug 2010 17:26

so wen the Saxons were showing violence towards the Vikings could this not be percieved as protecting their families x

in the same lighte the junk we dig up out of the ground may look like tet to us yet our ancient ancestors treasures these object ~ bit like an old blue stone I got in a gold inlay sept its only plated and the stone is just glass my daughter cast it aside when she was looking through my jewellery box yet its one of my most treasured possesions why cos it belonged to my Grandmother x

Mel I am not sure where you are heading with this

but

I have always said that I would protect me and mine no matter what and if that meant shooting somebody so be it. A tad drastic in comment but not in sentiment.

So yes what some could percieve as a violent nature is from me pure protectiveness on my behalf.

a bit like a mother animal and her cubs.

ty Uzzi where am I heading deep into the tomes of time this is after all a place where we discover the past x what Im getting at it until we look at the bigger picture we often make hasty judgements of which I myself am often found guilty and this time is not exception see I have always admired the Normans for bringing us such beautiful artchitecture ar castles, catherdrals etc inasmuch as I admired the Romans for ar roads, baths etc what I didn't look at in both these cases was the cost to us mere Saxons I am now looking at it from new eyes from a different perspective or as Mike Rutherford puts it "we may have a new perspective on a different day" those poor Saxons lost homes, land everything so we could have beautiful castles and cathedrals to look at the land they once owned for their sins they had to work hard on as slaves for the rest of their days ~ would we have not also shown violence in the protection of ar familes x

And, following Joy, a better lay out and some punctuation to make it easier to read :)

"Thank you Uzzi. Where am I heading?
Deep into the tomes of time. This is after all a place where we discover the past. What I'm getting at it, until we look at the bigger picture we often make hasty judgments, of which I myself am often found guilty and this time is
no(t) exception.

See, I have always admired the Normans for bringing us such beautiful architecture, our castles, cathedrals etc. Inasmuch as I admired the Romans for are ( our) roads, baths etc what I didn't look at in both these cases was the cost to us mere Saxons. I am now looking at it from ( with) new eyes, from a different perspective or as Mike Rutherford puts it "we may have a new perspective on a different day".

Those poor Saxons lost homes, land, everything so we could have beautiful castles and cathedrals to look at. The land they once owned, for their sins they had to work hard on as slaves for the rest of their days ~ would we have not also shown violence in the protection of are (our) families?x "

it's pedantic maybe, but it does make an interesting subject so much easier to read I think?

One man's 'terrorist' is another man's 'freedom fighter' ( that's the Irish in me ;) )

Mel I admire the Romans for their buildings etc ..in fact the Romans have left many things still for today, but they were violent and wanted to dominate. Now that's fine if your a Roman of good birth and standing
But more to the point the problem would only be if you lived in that era, as we didn't I do think it's okay to admire the Romans for what they have left behind and do remember the Roman and Norman culture was about many years before 'Christ' .

You say we poor Saxons but I'm sorry to tell you very few of us Brits are pure breds, we all have in us some Norman/ Roman/ invading army in us, over the years.

footie...I HAVE corrected other people and they have corrected mine...but I am my worst critic, I even correct my spelling on threads that I am looking back on in advanced search lol.

It's an interesting topic...but personally I can't read things if they have no punctuation, it's too hard on the eyes when one is as myopic as me, it is nothing to do with how one speaks ( dialect wise) , when you speak you pause for breath in between sentences so the person listening can understand basically, that is the function of punctuation in the written word.
