The bagpipes.......lovely! Had the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards at my mums funeral (CD). My dad still has some bagpipes in the house which belonged to my grandfather........we are not sure but think he aquired them during WW1........I really find it hard to listen without blubbering! Especially Amazing Grace.

A lovely CD Black Watch (Dark Island)

Good Morning Golden Girl1 and all
Very wet and miserable here today in Derbyshire. It would be, just because I am going out for the first time in about 5 weeks.
Anyway Emma, there is a full page spread in today's Daily Mail about Bill Millin and the part he played with Lord Lovatt. I am saving it to read with my lunch.
Hope you are having better weather than it is here.
Speak later

'Emma' Report 20 Aug 2010 09:00

Morning Julia,
Weather much about the same here in Aberdeen.
All over by what the forecast says at least it's not
cold quite muggy in fact.
I think Bill died in a nursing home in England but
not sure, let me know if it says so in the paper.
Take care.

Hi GG1,

From Obituaries in The Scotsman today.

Bill Millin was born in Canada in 1922 and the family moved to Glasgow in 1925.

Bill suffered a stroke in 2003 and had been living in a nursing home in Dawlish, Devon where he died.

Morning Robert,
Thanks for that info didn't know he was
born in Canada. I had heard somewhere
that he was in England, when you visit
Gordon Highlanders Museum in Aberdeen
they have info on him there.
My OH is also a Robert but known as Robbie.
Bit of useless info for you haha.

And if he had been a Rab know doubt
I would have been Mary Doll. Mind

Good Afternoon Emma, late with lunch as putting all the shopping away. I have just read the article, which only refers to the actions of the day itself. Bill on that particualr day, June 6th, 1944, was only 21, and Lord Lovatt, himself only 34 was Chief of the Clan Fraser, and Brigadier od the 2,500 Commandos. Lordy, I thought he was older. The French awarded Bill the Croix d'Honneur, and a statue is to be erected, close to the beach where he marched ashore, Sword Beach. He was Lord Lovatts personal piper, and in the film was played by the Queen Mother's personal piper.
At a D-Day renunion, many years later, with German troops who had been there on the day, Bill asked a Commander why they never shot him. The answer was that, because of his stance, with bullets all around him, and his playing of the bagpipes, they considered him mad. And they were not going to waste a bullet on someone who was mad.!!!!!!
Reading it, makes you shudder, and shed a little tear.

It always amazes me the courage of men
and women in difficult and dangerous
situations. Special breed and thank
