I hate travelling and flying although I do it 3/4 times a year, usually 3 or 4 hour flights, however the last time I went to the States I arrived feeling tired scruffy and generally cream crackered !!!!!
In Nov we are visiting husbands family for Thanks Giving and we are really looking forward to it, however I am dreading the travelling, 9 hrs from Manchester to Philadelphia (think Ispelled that right) then a 4hr wait then 3hrs to Denver. How do I arrive looking and feeling fresh.

Fly 1st class??? lol

Seriously, as you have a lay over in Phili, perhaps you could research to see if they have showers, and if possible change into fresh clothes?

If you don't already, you could try herbal sleeping pills for the TA flight, but check about other meds you may be on. Drinks lots of fluid, but avoid alcohol.

It takes us about 5 days to get over jet lag, which is not pleasant. Hopefully your in laws will make allowances and not expect you to pull late nights.

OH thinks that it is best to eat at the local time of day. Some people recommend forcing yourself to keep awake during the day, but last time we took afternoon naps and had a lot more energy, and recovered more quickly (4 days instead of 5) in the States.

Gill
some years ago I used to travel to New York fairly fequently with my husband, he went back and forth for many years. We always went to bed a couple of hours earlier than usual in the run up to departure day.

Once we arrived we would get to our destination, unpack and have a shower and then stayed awake according to local time...within 24 to 36 hrs we were absolutely fine.

Try to avoid sleeping tablets if you can as they really do not help, make sure that you have plenty of water drinks, any coffee , tea etc can cause dehydration,

If you are on medication why not discuss this with your GP as he may be able to give further advice as to when to take them on the day before and the day of your departure.

I hope you have a good journey.

Relax and enjoy
Take care

Have you booked your flight? If not perhaps you could consider flying across at night and sleeping for the TA part of the journey, then the rest of the journey will be in your body's 'daytime' regardless of the hour there.

Bridget's advice is good Gill. Try not to sleep until the right time for where you are. I always find that I suffer more from jet lag when coming home than when going to the States. Have a small spray bottle (under 100 as allowed) and spritz your face to moisturise the skin. Also have a tissue impregnated with lavender oil to breath in from to calm you when agitated.
