yes agree rules gone bonkers!!

Think there are some rules regarding calling something a cake too- like J*ffa cakes- they're not biscuits, but are they a cake??

So I take it Angel Cake is banned as well then?

That is one of the EEC rules, the description has to fit the item ie also no butterfly cakes, again no butterflies were used in them. Rules gone bonkers methinks....................

Fairy Cakes are Sponge Cakes?... Yes? with Icing on sometimes ?? Yes?

Pretty sure you can`t buy Oven bottoms in As*a down here, so presumably they are just made for the Northern shops?

Im still going to call them buns!

I just know they are bread- definitely ask for a chip muffin from the Chippy and I used to have to go to buy teacakes from the bakers for sandwiches as a child

I can still buy Lancsashire oven bottoms from A*da too. (they're big and flat and a bit floury)

Barm cakes, I think had an extra ingredient to change the taste, but still know them as bread.

Oh and I forgot to mention Baps!

So its actually National Fairy Cake week then???

Cos of the EEC rules we are no longer able to call them fairy cakes................ cos no fairies were used to make them!!!!! So instead we go to the american version Cup cakes!!!!

Hmmm - could be why sweet cakes are now called cupcakes!!
I'm sorry, Lancashire Lass - but a muffin and tea cake are sweet - not bread rolls - which are savoury. I know you can add sugar to bread dough to make it sweet, but once the sugar is added they are no longer bread rolls.
Perhaps I wasn't the only one to be confused! LOL

A Barm cake is a bread roll- also known as a muffin, tea cake , oven bottom- we have them all up here!! lol

And what are Barm/Balm Bam??? cakes that they order from the cafe in Coronation Street??

...and the added confusion of a muffin in the north of england being a bread roll and not a giant bun!!

I used to get confused over buns and rolls.
Mum would send me out for 6 buns and I'd come back with 6 icing covered cakey concoctions! No good for the cheese roll my dad wanted!! LOL

Now I've finally managed to work out the difference they now call them cupcakes???

That's not a cup they're in - it's a cake case - they're buns!
Mind you - Chelsea buns/iced buns are totally different. Not in a cake case at all - and no good for a cheese roll. Now I know how/why I got confused.

It may be an improvement on the current selection! lol

As a country we are becoming very Americanised Lancslass

Thats what I cant figure out Nicky- I dont know when it changed in the UK to cupcake!!

These words just slip into the language and we dont notice until its too late!! lol

Well if cupcakes are American...then why is it cupcake week here?? I can only presume there are a lot consumed in this country?

Perhaps 'bun' is a northern thing then, but cupcakes are American as they measure quantitys in cups therefore they are known as cupcakes.
