Robert Report 21 Sep 2010 15:31

Hi Mau,

I love the Makems as much as I love the Geordies and I feel perfectly at home (and accepted) in both Areas.

Hi Robert and mtg

Yes the Great North run on Sunday 30 years! was great to see the thousands of runners collecting for their causes. Marvellous to see Sir Chris Chattaway 80 years old coming into the finish and of course the amazing Haile Gebrselassie coming in first!

mtg the arch on the Marsden rock collapsed in 1996, but the Grotto pub & seafood restaurant,in the cliffside are still there, they were closed for a while but reopened again.

Ooh Makems Robert...good stock? ...erm Geordies purlease lol

....My mil and fil came from shh.Sunderland...but they were really lovely :O)

Mau

Hi mtg,

You come from good stock with all that Makem/Geordie history behind you.

You would see a bit of the Area if you watched the Great North Run on TV on Sunday.

Elizabeth2469049 Report 20 Sep 2010 23:40

For those who missed it - including me - it is on ITV player.
And the picture looking down the street in Wallsend at the ship being built is a standard in all our North-eastern history books!

Mauatthecoast

Mauatthecoast Report 20 Sep 2010 22:57

No offence taken mtg.
I just thought you were referring to how strange it was that a huge ship lay at the end of the street,as I had no idea of your family history. What part of Tyneside does your family originate from?

Glad you like the Geordie way of life Robert, after 40 yrs. we must now have adopted you......
....and yes BC I could be mistaken for Jock's very, very young sister ;o

Robert

Robert Report 20 Sep 2010 20:27

Hi mtg,

I agree - it did look a bit "cardboard" like. The join between the street and the ship was not good but otherwise an interesting look at Tyneside during and just after the War.

Jock on the Tyne.

Robert

Robert Report 20 Sep 2010 20:16

No mtg, I am not offended or upset and it is strange that a ship is being built at the end of your street, but that is what happened on the Tyne.

I am not a Geordie ( I am not even English!!) and I found it strange at first but after over 40 years in the North East of England, I am now used to and enjoy the Geordie way of life.

Robert

Robert Report 20 Sep 2010 19:02

Yes Mau,

It was the time when the Tyne had some character about it , not like now.

Mauatthecoast

Mauatthecoast Report 20 Sep 2010 18:38

aw thanks Robert *flutters eyelashes* me mam told us ;O)

My maternal side of the family all worked on the Tyne

I thought it was a nice 'gentle' story showing how war affected families

Mtg - aren't you lucky you do not know of air-raids. The only problem I had as I have already said on another thread was the blackout curtain was missing on front doors and that the jitterbug did not arrive in this country until the arrival of the U.S. forces in 1942.

Robert

Robert Report 20 Sep 2010 16:21

Hi mtg,

There was nothing naff about the ship at the end of the street on the Tyne in those days.

Hi Mau,

I thought you would be too young to remember ships at the end of the street at Swan Hunters!!!

Thank you Kathleen for the information. I will have a look at it this afternoon when all is quiet, and domestic duties are complete. Then I can sit with me knitting and enjoy.

I really enjoyed this programme, what I saw of it. I had to go to bed at 10.15, as past my bedtime, havn't got the staying power or the stamina these days. I really wanted to hear the singing, and know how it ended. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to let me know.
Talking of blackout curtains on the other thread. I remember going to 'play' at the home of a friend about 1959/60. They still had their blackout curtains up, and to the best of my knowledge where still up about twenty years later when the friend's mother left the house for a bungalow.
