lol I remember my mother going crazy because a school friend told me that sugar water stiffened your stiff underskirts more - mum didn't appreciate me trying it out. Had a shocking pink and black lace one!!!! loved it. Little Eva was a contenstant on Britain's Best Dish a few months ago, and they were talking to her about her record Locomotion.

Memories!!!

I loved reading your story of the days of dancing the twist.

My mother always used to make me the latest skirts and dresses. I had one like you describe - tight with the frill at the bottom edge. A few years before that she used to make most of my 'pencil slim' skirts.

I still have one net petticoat, bought from Neatawear. The 'paper nylon' ones didn't survive.

It was good that you had two cousins to look out for you, even if it was a mixed blessing!

All the best,

Jill (Pascoe nee Watson)

Oooh! I remember the petticoats. Sometimes were stiffened with starch or a mix of sugar and water to get the most "flounces". Or wearing two or three shop-bought ones to boost the skirt! I remember envying Carole in the "Young Ones" with Cliff Richard. Winkle-pickers and sling-back shoes. Could still do the Twist but, as said - am more likely to out me back out these days!

Remember Streatham locarno in 1951. before the twist. By the time that came along I had just had a baby and used it to get my shape back! There was a big change between 1950 and 59. It was my niece who was wearing net petticoats, I asked her what she wanted for her birthday and guess what,, she wanted a net petticoat, which she got after I had cleared it with her parents.

I remember I used to love twisting too.....seeing how far down or back you could go. Funny how most of us who did it can't do it now, me included!! Did all that 'twisting' do our knees in?? lol

remember it well - can still do it but can't get down too low!!!

Mum made my frilly petticoats for me and when I got married in 1959 IMum made my short lace wedding dress with stacks of frilly petticoats under it and I had white stilettos which had just come out - I thought I looked the bees knees - I must say the photos in my album are pretty good and that short dress did not date

happy days long since gone sadly

There was a soap opera on BBC about that time called Compact and a dance called the Method came out of it where you had to pretend to be things.

I got my mother to soak my net petticoat in sugar to make it very stiff.

And she also soaked a cotton crinoline petticoat in sugar to make that stiffer than starch

which I then decided to iron

OOOOOOH BOY was I ever in trouble! It really made a sticky mess of the plate!

I used to wear the cotton petticoat under the net one ..... then it didn't rip my nylons to pieces.
