My son was born in 1962. I had child benefit for his last nine months at school. It was one pound a week. The nine months payments did not cover the cost of his blazer (£48).

I do not think it the tax payers should be expected to support numerous children. If you can't afford to keep them then don't have them.

Benefit for the first one or two would be a better system.

I wrote to MP yesterday complaining about EU residents in this country claiming for their children who are back home and not resident here. Likewise I complained about ex-pats claiming benefit. Those children are not resident here either. No wonder this country is in trouble.

Well-people on the borderline of the 44 K can

Negotiate with their employers to reduce salary

Increase their pension payments

Both will bring their salaries down

I totally agree with getting rid of people earning in the higher tax bracket not getting Child Benefit and I'm not sure people should be getting it if for every child if they choose to have a large family - large families also cost more in terms of health care and education.

I firmly disagree that jobs should go to people born in this country first - they should go to whoever does the job best. I'm lucky enough to be descended from many immigrants and to have many immigrants to the UK as friends and I really loathe that sort of anti-foreigner attitude.

Regarding ex pats, I have friends who have paid taxes all their working lives in this country and retired out to
Spain because they can afford a better quality of living there than they could here - why the hell shouldn't they benefit from their hard work and be able to claim their pensions? What if a couple have worked for thirty years here and then gone abroad, should their child allowance immediately be cut off despite all their years of paying into the system?

they havent thought it out if we can find loop holes like the one for if two earn £43k get it but one single parent earns £44k doesnt get it something not right there.

another one is how long you get it for.
Eldest just finished college her birthday is July and I got it up to startof September but her boyfriend is born March but his mum got it up to same time as me so am presuming that even if you were born the previous sept but at college you still got it til this sept.

They stop your child tax credit as soon as they are 18 but when they finish college they cant sign on til your child benefit stopped thus saving the government £30 a week but we still have to feed them, buy interview clothes and dtationery to send out endlessapplication forms for jobs that dont bother to reply..

Also you dont lose the £20 a week for first one if you have more than one child as when 1st one stops getting it the 2nd child then becomes 1st hild and get the full amount for them .

Appreciate this thread and the comments from you all.

My sons Family Allowance went to buy meat for our freezer. A friend of one of my sons was given his Mum's FA for pocket money!

My kids were gutted!

The CB money going abroad is a perfect disgrace. Time the Government got its priorities right.

Visitors to this country if not from the EU should be billed for any medical care they receive whilst on holiday in this country.

If we go to Spain on holiday we take out insurance, or at least have a EU medical card to cover us.

If we visit the US we make darn sure that we are covered or it would cost us £££££.

This should apply to people visiting this country from abroad & could help put money back into our care system..

Lol Rita ,

I thought I kept old bills, but they were/ are for 1976 for household stuff when we set up home:).. can't remember food prices.

But it has a bearing on this thread, as loads of peeps don't cook from scratch and buy convenience foods (costly) and believe you me I know the faces of those who buy that, the ones that I used to meet whilst working, whilst they didn't !
I'm talking about third generation families who have never worked in their lives, and brag about it, they can afford to smoke and drink tho !

I can't quite relate to your prices, lol I was a mere babe then:)
But it is interesting, I do remember buying an uncut large loaf of bread for one and six from our local grocers:)

Must go , tea will never get done otherwise:))

Its all a farce

If 1 parent earns 44 k then CB is stop but if both parents earn less then 43K each then is isn't.......Where is the sense in that, it just don't add up

I agree about CB going out to people that don't live in this country its stupid

I have never voted in my life....whats the point

The year I was born Rita :)

What has amused me on the list, is that my mum told me the only things she could eat while suffering from morning sickness was boiled fish and potatoes
so now I know how much they cost lol.

Shoot me down in flames ,if you want !

I believe families should have as many children that you are able to provide for on your wage /salary, without Government help.

Families on benefits should also be as responsible.

There are many reasons why people find themselves in that position who genuinely need help, but then there are peeps that abuse the system.
Another child is a meal ticket to more benefits for some !.. and a council house !

Hubby and I were fortunate to have fairly well paid jobs, but we lived within our means and limited our family to 2 children.
I congratulate the families that want more children, and hubby works flat out to provide for them, good on them:)

I worked for the Social Security and the money the Gov dishes out to large families, doesn't give any incentive for them to work ( Not talking about genuine sick peeps that can't work )

As for Child benefit being stopped for peeps with income over £44 /45 K
about time!, and limiting it to peeps on benefit who continue to produce off springs, birth control is free! Totally agree.
And for foreigners that can claim for children who live abroad............ well I won't get stared on that one, otherwise we won't have tea tonight !
Rant over :)

Could go on forever on this subject, but wont.
Those who disagree well sad on you ! But the thread is titled a discussion, I'm just giving my opinion, but I'm open to criticism.

They,re not the only ones that do it, and they don,t have to prove the children exist either.I think all overseas aid should be stopped untill we put our own house in order. After all, Why should we borrow money at high interest rates to give away to places like India, China and Russia, and the money going to other Countries needs checking out as to what happens to it,lots go into Swiss bank accounts and not to whom it was meant.**M**.

Might be interesting to know?

£20 today is the equivalent of 1 pound, 17 shillings and 7 old pennies in 1950, £1 6s 2d in 1960 and £7.02 in 1980.

I was looking to see if I could find a comparative 'shopping basket' but I can't... to see what it would buy then and now.

Kathlyn Report 4 Oct 2010 13:34

I had my first child in 1959 and and a planned second in 1963, but all the time we chewed our fingers to the bone incase I became pregnant again. my third child was born in 1965. This put a great strain on our marriage as I could not take the pill.

. With birth control today there is no excuse for any woman/girl to become pregnant, but it is a right of passage for immature boys/girls to have sex and ignore precautions.....

It used to be the lads who wore the conquest badges, but it is the girls now. Each time I walk to the paper shop sitting outside, smoking, well dressed, young girls, 18ish, bouncing the pram up and down whilst they decide what to wear when they go to the nightclub on Saturday...whilst a pensioner has to decide what they can afford to eat today.

Through no fault of my own, I had to bring my three children up on my own and the FA was a lifeline, we did not have holidays, black and white TV no phone, but i came through it debt free and with my head held high.

In all honesty, do a family with an income of £45,000 need family allowance??

Oh and I remember we lost tax concessions to get this CB to be aid oops Paid direct to MUMs..
We also lost married persons tax allowance!
We've lost Mortgage Tax relief!
All stopped so they got more tax to supposedly pay for these extra benefits..

I would like to know though, WHERE are all these Jobs they are talking about so people don't have to claim any benefits? There certainly aren't ANY of that pay a decent wage or full time hours here in Lincoln..
