Some associations in the UK are banning hanging clothes out to dry, because it is unsightly and lowers the price of housing !

The article is mainly to do with the US .

FGS we haven't all got tumble dryers, think of the carbon footprint and cost anyway.
We have plenty of free windy weather where I live and as I wash every day ( unless there is a deluge of rain) there is no way I would comply with such a plan !!

I am fortunate that I don't live in rented accommodation, but there would be an uproar in this borough if the council imposed such a ridiculous plan !!!!

i havent got a line at the mo, took it down for littlemans party and forgot to put it back up haha

I'm sure it wont happen in our borough, but I refuse to be restricted if I was with a housing association that did.

One of ours lives in California which in her area is dry from normally from Apr - end Sept and they have to use the tumble drier instead of line dry in their back yard. As the eco lobby is strong in CA, it is incomprehensible why the bylaws haven't been changed.

Mind you, as she 'doesn't do ironing' the clothes do come out largely wrinkle free. The tumble driers over there are much larger and more efficient than ours.

My washing was out today , but only got half dry !!

So heating had to come on and clothes had to on rads, must take them off before hubby comes home, cos the condensation causes the plaster to absorb the water and goes black.
Fortunately we do have a ventilation system which will dry the air, must put that on for a bit:)

I need a clothes line! Wherever i've lived - the first thing I put up is a line - even when I lived in a tent for 6 months! Even there, I would rather hand wash my clothes and hang them up, than go to the launderette.

There's nothing better than getting bone dry sheets off the line on a breezy summer's day and putting them straight back on the bed - that smell of summer is fantastic!
My computer is upstairs in a back bedroom. I'm on the top of a hill and have a wonderful view of the back gardens of the terraced houses running down the hill. To see rows and rows of washing flapping in the wind is a lovely sight!

These Housing associations are worried about aesthetics?
They don't know the meaning of the word!

And as Sandie says, drying the washing indoors causes condensation - even a tumble drier cause it too.

up here in the north of scotland, its always windy and hence i get my washing dried free most of the time. only use the tumble on wet days when i cant get it outside. if they banned it here there would be an outcry. every other house here has out daily washing and lovely to se it too. i have about 3 washes a day, so if i had to tumble all that, my electricity bill would hit the roof and so would oh lol.

Love to get into bed with fresh sheets that have been washed and dried outdoors, the same day...sooo fresh, I just bury my nose into them.lol

When I lived at Frinton on Sea in Essex I was told in no uncertain manner that putting ones washing out on a Sunday was strictly forbidden.
I checked this with the local council and indeed it was just as said. When I asked why, it apparently went back to when the first houses were built in 1880s.
Frinton was always a little behind the real world and it still is to a large extent and I think that this was because the level crossing disected us from the rest of the world. I believe that not much has changed although I haven't been there for a couple of years.

What a load of tripe!!!.This reminded me of when I was young and we moved into a new house on a small new estate.No-one was allowed to have a TV ariel on the roof.They all had to be in the loft.

Soon we will all have to have the same cars in one street so we all match !!!! and only one car per house so we dont lower the prices!!!!

I have a friend who now lives in America and when she comes home to visit she is always amazed that we hang our washing outside to dry. She tells me that no one does that in America!
Also, I remember when I first got married my mother being very disapproving when I did my washing on a Sunday and put it out on the line to dry.
I think it all goes back to when Sunday was kept as a sacred day. You wore your best clothes, never did housework and the
shops were all shut so you couldn't go shopping!

I should add, that as I work full time I now do all of the above, lol.

I live in a street of semis where most peeps have a fair sized back garden where their lines are, mine being one of the first built is larger than most ,yeaah !!.. Great for veg growing buta pain when lawn mowing !
No one's washing line is on view from the street ! If it were tuff !
If you drive across the streets on our state , it is actually the cars that are any eyesore, not on our street as it was the first one built and all have long drives enough to accommodate 4 cars, but the st above is dreadful ,they knock the walls half down and park on their lawns, park both sides on the pavements, it's manic.
Bridget ,as for Sunday my grandparents mum and her 3 siblings went to chapel 3 times on a Sunday, and boy was it a walk up an extremely steep hill from where they lived, and quite a distance, and no there was certainly no washing done that day ! Chapel, food and that was it :
I'm afraid I have wash almost every day ( don't know how I managed when I was working to get it all dried, well yes I do really rads and the tumble drier which used to drive hubby mad .. but what else could I do.
Now I'm in and out watching the weather turning the clothes to be in whatever sun we have, and getting them on the clothes horse at the first sign of rain.
This weekend has been dreadful weather wise, had a load of towels in the washer, washed overnight, which had to be tumbled, dau changed her bedding and washed it late so it's still in the tumbler now, much to hubby's disgust.. thinging of our leccie bills.

These bureaucrats wishing to ban washing lines should think of the damage the alternative is doing to our carbon footprint .
Waste less use of electricity instead of harnessing a natural resource like wind and fresh air (for most of us ..fresh )

I can see why washing was banned on Sundays in the past - but is it really 'work' to shove a load of washing in the machine and hang it out when it's spun?
Hanging out the washing can be quite restful in between cooking a full Sunday lunch!
