Ah, so the car is American but it could still have been taken in UK. A lot of cars have been brought over in the past by American Servicement living here.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 8 Oct 2010 21:10

However, not sure if they would have kept the American number, not sure of the rules in the forties.

I'M JUST CONFUSED

AS USUAL...

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Oct 2010 21:26

I'm curious how you found that, Dizzi.

The plate doesn't look like any of these:

http://www.peterclericuzio.com/licenseplates.html#NJ
- 1913 plate

http://www.diannevetromile.com/4NJ50s.jpg
- 1950, 1951

http://archive.liveauctioneers.com/archive3/conestogaauction/12713/3192_1_lg.jpg
- 1920, 1926, 1929

It's possible they had different looking plates during the war, but all of those show the state designation and the year.

Vehicle licensing in Canada and the US is by province and state, there isn't a standard licence for the country.

So the licence plate will always show the name of the state, in the US.

The pic you have doesn't, it's just a licence number, and it looks completely European to me, I have never seen a North American licence plate that looked like that.

Dizzi's thread about this

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1243277

so anybody who doesn't know what it's about doesn't have to go hunting. (Dizzi! You should have added to that one.)

And the photo in question:

... Well, fine, I was going to give the link, but the person has deleted it. I hate posts being deleted.

to throw another spanner into the works, I have a 1972 AA handbook, listing the then international registrations, and as far as I can see the only countries using a J before the numbers, are

HKJ....Jordan (no, Not her with the big,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,)the other one!!
Jersey ... GBJ.
and Japan ....J

in england
the council registrations at that time(1972) using a J were.....

AJ..yorkshire
BJ..suffolk
CJ Hereforshire
DJ.St.Helens
EJ. Cardiganshire
FJ. Exeter
GJ.London
HJ.Southend
IJ.Down(Ireland)
JJ.London
KJ. Kent
LJ.Bournemouth
MJ.Bedfordshire
NJ.Sussex(east)
OJ.Birmingham
PJ.Surrey
QJ(special category, for temporary imports from abroad)
RJ.Salford
SJ.Bute
TJ.Lancashire
UJ.Salop(shropshire??)
VJ.Herefordshire
XJ.Manchester
ZJ.Dublin( Ireland.

the above is for info only as the UK did'nt use 5 digit registrations anyway
the mascot the lad is sittingon looks like the Morris mascot
but the car looks LHD to me

TheBlackKnight Report 9 Oct 2010 11:11

JaneyCanuck Report 9 Oct 2010 20:36

I know the photo is still there ... what I meant was that the link to it in Dizzi's other thread was needlessly deleted.

I went hunting and found it.

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/media/default.aspx?pk=2789088

I'm just unable to see that as a North American licence plate.

I say send the pic to Top Gear and let 'em prove they're the experts!

Bob what makes you think it is left hand drive? I have looked with a magnifying glass and not way can I see a steering wheel. And are we sure that is not Vera Lyn? The more I look the more it looks like her.

One other thing, did car reg numbers in the 40s run to more than three numbers?

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 9 Oct 2010 22:44

well Ann,
I rather fancy thats a tiny bit of steering wheel just peeping over the dashboard......maybe wrong but ........
.LOL if only the kid wasn't in the way..........LOL

dont know really about the numbers in the 40's Ann but uk no's were only three

Ireland was an exception

they used 4 numbers and also I's and z's

reckon thats why so many cars were pulled by the police in the 60's-70's during the campaign on the mainland by the IRA

(overheard a guy in the DVLA office complaining about being pulled over so often) thats why.........had irish plates on his car..

Dizzi, I know you didn't delete the thread !!!!

The person who posted the link to the picture deleted her post in your thread.

That's why I had to go hunting for it.

I added that above because there's no point in people talking about a picture if nobody knows where to find it.

One thing I did when you posted your first thread was copy the photo and paste it into a Word document.

Then you can enlarge it to twice the size to see whether you can see more details.

For instance, I think some of those things in the sky overhead are just marks / creases on the photograph.

As I said in the other thread, the low walls around the houses just are not North American. In most of the US, there aren't even brick houses, let alone brick walls around yards. If there is anything around a front yard, which there mostly is not, it would be a wooden fence.

That brick wall in the left foreground looks *exactly* like one I saw on Escape to the Country this morning! The low wall, with the taller brick post at each end.

Vera Lynn? Maybe she was visiting, and someone got a souvenir snapshot taken with her!
