Only if they obviously are aware of what they are doing. It is such a permanent thing.

Bobtanian Report 18 Oct 2010 10:30

given that this is a US charity , and that this article only mentions male sterilisation........should this idea not apply to female addicts also?(or does it already?)
of course a male snip is a lot cheaper than a female one.

So are they saying,,,we'll pay you to have the snip and stop you producing kids ,but you can still be an addict?

£200 will keep an hard core addict for a couple of days or so....£200 towards a treatment programe would be a better way.

This article from the BBC does mention long term contraception, possibly a sub dermis implant for females?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8500285.stm

I'd imagine that most of the money would go on drugs/alcohol. If a man or woman wanted long term contraception, they shouldn't be paid to have it done. There is no 100% guarentee that a vasectomy can be reversed successfully. Addicts have been know to turn their lives around, after all.

i think it will throw a lot of long term implications, like they will sue, for there human rights saying they were desprate for a "hit" so did it for the money but now there clean they want more children,a nd sue

i think in theory its brilliant, how many children are born addicts or to addicts and are neglected and somtimes worse, saying that not all addicts neglect there children , some go on to bring them upbrilliant whilst addicted to drugs, or realiseing there child is more important than there drugs and get clean.

so im kinda thinking yeah great in theory but i think it will bring to any things up later on once the addicts aec lean, or need more money and decide t sue,

WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH, NO WAY TO TREAT HUMANS ADDICT OR NOT.

Lindsey* Report 18 Oct 2010 12:04

Children born to addicts are generally very poorly, and go through the same withdrawal symptoms as adults,. It's very painful for a newborn.
The charity is'nt going to hand over the cash for this operation to them, but will pay the bill for the treatment,

ladylol Report 18 Oct 2010 12:10

YIKES

example it cousts 15000 a week to run a small centre for addicts to be treated for there addiction, firstly why is that cost so high ? so i would say use that 200.00 to treat an addict to withdraw , would be a lot cheaper .

MarionfromScotland Report 18 Oct 2010 13:41

Tricky one. wheres the £200 going to go? On more drugs/drink?
What if they manage to sort themselves out and decide they want kids?

Something should be done about woman/men who go on to have one kid after another, who are then taken into care/adopted etc.

MarionfromScotland

MarionfromScotland Report 18 Oct 2010 14:56

I know of two people who have done the same Stray. They go on and have more kids with the same problems due to the mothers 'habits'.
It goes on. As you say poor kids. In cases like that, yes they should be sterilised.Cant be good for the mothers either.

Merlin

Merlin Report 18 Oct 2010 14:58

Adding to my last post, It would be a good idea to confiscate all the goods ,Bank Accounts etc of the drug pushers and Barons and use it to cure the addicts.**M**.

MarionfromScotland

MarionfromScotland Report 18 Oct 2010 15:17

Good idea Merlin.

Tracey

Tracey Report 18 Oct 2010 15:52

I work for a drug agency... appalled at this idea. My experience is that many drug users do make good enough parents.......although some do not. This steralization idea only serves to stigmatize drug users further. There are plenty of lousy parents who dont take drugs!

Also where does this idea come from that drug users are poor? There are many users that are in work, often in good jobs...... and many go to great lengths to hide their drug use from their children.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 18 Oct 2010 20:24

......So, they sterillise this gneration, then the children of parents who don't take drugs grow up and take drugs - they're sterilised etc etc.

As Tracey said, some drug addict make good parents, and not all drug addicts stay drug addicts once they find they are expecting a child. Reality kicks in!

While we're at it, what about alcoholics, or adults who have, say a 50% chance of their child having a congenital abnormality?
The children of all these adults MAY suffer.

The word genocide comes to mind.
