in the box you're unpacking, the one that you were careful of because it contained THE 'sentimental' item :( The only box it seems the removal men tipped upside down...top things smashed and yet the most repaired ( glued lol) fragile piece of victorian glass survived.

Oh Rose : (( Is whatever it was beyond repair ?

It was a china unicorn Amanda, given to me by my ex fiance, it's in fragments ( there's symbolism for you lol) and yet the package next to it was fine, there were 6 little glasses from the 60s in a stand... 4 survived , 2 didn't .

Just remembered that I saw one box fall off the hand trolley... pretty certain it was this one ( it was a printer box) so it was just the force of the drop.

Oh well, they are only 'things', the memory is still intact ( mostly lol).

Have move a few times, and always took the most fragile things in the car. When we didnt have a car< OH travelled in the back of the lorry to keep an eye on the dogs!

Aunt gave me a tip years ago and there have been occasions when I used it - teapot spouts, fragile china, wrap with wet newspaper and let dry. Just have to soak it off at the other end.

We too have always moved fragile things by car. Bit difficult if you don't have a car though..

We did in one move 'lose' a huge old oval meat plate. Never did find out where that went.

That's a good idea Chris,

Jean last time I moved I packed the unicorn and some other china in my suitcase and took it myself, should have done the same again!

Rambling Report 9 Nov 2010 21:12

Ann, I've still got the meat plate intact lol, not that it ever gets used now.

A broken Unicorn : (( that is to sad for words . I had a lovely one once and sadly it went the same way .

So Rose , I guess you decided to stay put for the time being then ?

I have Amanda, lol I am not sure who was more stunned at me turning down the cash, me or the estate agent !

Time will tell if it was the right thing to do anyway. In the meantime the boxes are being unpacked and the garden thought about :) There was a jay feeding in next door's garden this morning, there is a play park behind the house with a fair number of trees, so I am looking forward to seeing which birds turn up when I have got the bird feeder up :)

Well Rose , I'd like to wish you and your lad many happy times in your new home : ))
How exciting to have a new garden to think about and plan during the winter months , lucky you : ) x

Me too, Rose - I wish you much happiness. I lost a few things when I moved, one way or another, but contentment, family and a garden are the important things for me. Hang on to that meat plate - I'm sure it will be used in the future!

Thankyou both :))

One thing I have to buy is a lilac, can't be without that in the garden !

I have a carrier bag of seeds from the garden in Wales, and some from the last house ( marigolds!) so at very least should have a bit of colour next year. :)

What a shame Rose. I know they're only 'things' but I know they represent so much at times.

Every time I set eyes on the Marigolds in my front garden you pop into my mind Rose ....lol....one of them is still happily flowering away in this grim weather ! I hope they grow as abundantly in you new garden .

Rambling Report 9 Nov 2010 22:08

Thankyou Trish and Sue, I was a bit choked, because it carried memories of a happy time and because it was very pretty, not seen one the same anywhere since.

Rambling Report 9 Nov 2010 22:12

The marigolds lasted well this year Amanda, there are a few things in the garden here already , a very pretty small fuchsia by the back door, a conifer, raspberries, and a few 'wild flowers' which I shall keep, a weigelia and a bergenia...ooh and a little flowering cherry I think it is in the corner :)

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 9 Nov 2010 22:23

It sounds as if you have the makings of a cottage garden there Rose , I bet there are allsorts lurking in them there boarders ....lol

Rambling Report 9 Nov 2010 22:30

I will be watching closely when spring comes Amanda lol, there are some nice nasturtiums that have come over from next door not had any for a long while and they are very cheery on a dull November day :)

night night all :)
