Are you sure it's not Glass rather than Gloss?

Just thinking that it might be something to do with keeping the fire going in a glass works.

Can't find it on the old occupations site though.

Its Definitely gloss fireman as I have his occupation on my ggreat grandfathers marriage certificate. The family were originally from stoke upon trent area but they have been in scotland also.
