I was wondering if he maybe supervised the adding of a glaze to the pottery pieces ie cups plates pots ?

Its Definitely gloss fireman as I have his occupation on my ggreat grandfathers marriage certificate. The family were originally from stoke upon trent area but they have been in scotland also.

Do you know the area your ancestor worked in?

Are you sure it's not Glass rather than Gloss?

Just thinking that it might be something to do with keeping the fire going in a glass works.

Can't find it on the old occupations site though.
