Just now l heard some banging looked out the window to see 2 scrap metal men loading our old bath... onto their truck...blinky cheek we had'nt asked them. They said they had asked next door and it seems next door ARE OUT.....SO be careful not to leave garage doors open and stuff outside your house like that that you may want to keep. l had thought of putting it on freecycle!!!! grrrr how cheeky is that, actually its more than cheeky its stealing!!...lol
We let them have it, saved us a job in the end.
Be alert!!

Wonder how much they will get for that? I'm afraid I would have been b minded and told them to put it back!!!! Even if it caused me hassle to get rid of it.

Unfortunately Jude there is van which comes around here quite often , doing the same, and yes they also 'take' anything else that is on your driveway , bikes etc ,open garage is a haven to them or even your back garden !
I wouldn't call these peeps scrap merchants, gives those a bad name. I notice the exclamation marks after Scrap Merchants .lol
I have reported them to the police twice for dangerously overloading their vehicle, and have told them so!
They are obviously not taxed or insured as police can't get an address for them.
Someone could easily be killed if something fell from their van, a friend of mine was killed when a pipe came off an uncovered lorry with a skip came off it's load and straight thro her car:( RIP Lorraine

We are changing our bathroom suite next week, we don't have a local free cycle unfortunately so hope the plumber can take it away, otherwise I 'll call the council to collect it or put an ad in the local paper advertising as free. Those men in that van won't be having it !!

Oh Jude,

I didn't mean for my posting to sound as I thought you'd done anything wrong, please don't take it that way.
They did save you a job, think of it in that way.

There's always someone around for an opportunity to nick things and under different circumstances I'd probably let them have my bathroom suite, but it's the way that they van is always dangerously loaded that kicks me in the gut.

Emotionally

Jude, we have had that lorry here, and they took a new bath that was waiting to be fitted in the house over the road. I have my suspicions who they are but no proof, unfortunately. Thats months ago and she still hasnt a new bath.

I don't think the title of this thread should be 'Scrap metal men'. It should just be 'thieves'.

don't know where you folks live but in UK it is an offence to give "waste" to an unregistered carrier. If he dumps it somewhere illegally and it can be traced back to you, you can be fined something in region of £5,000 so be careful!!!

Interesting thread.

For a while we had a scrap-metal merchant asking on a regular basis if we had anything for him.

Another time he knocked on the door and asked to check our trailer - full of junk for the dump, not of use to him.

We live on a straight stretch of road in the countryside and twice I've seen his truck parked outside our house when I've come back from the shops.

If you look at our house on Google Earth his truck is, again, parked right outside our home.

I warned OH and the kids and we are very careful about doors and windows - and we are missing an old lawn-mower ready to go to the dump. We didn't tell anyone they could take it.

What really spooked me was when my grown-up daughter rang me to ask if I had looked at Google Earth and whose was that scruffy old truck parked outside?

I know a couple of these scrap dealers & i can tell you when the scrap prices are up then £1000 a week is easy money.

Just an example of prices they get,

alloy wheels a tenner each,

catalytic exhaust box, 60 to 80 quid.

Now, how can I fix a security camera at the front? The back is more unlikely, can be seen from several places.
