It make me see red because my daughter is working 37 hours plus and no one is there for her . If there are no jobs then they don't need to worry, not even the government can force someone to take a non existent job ;-)

I do know of some parents who use childcare that is nearer to work than to home.

No Cat, if it's a registered childminder that's fine BUT if there are none of them in a village, or if they are fully 'booked' then what? The provision of professional child care is limited in a lot of areas.

and as Joy says, where are all these jobs? if the qualified and newly unemployed public sector workers are queuing for jobs also...there are already 5 applicants for each job, and that is just the average figure.

Rose, I'm not too sure if they have to come off IS straight away or if they can still receive it but are expected to look for work. I remember having to have a six monthly interview myself with a lone parent advisor but I was still claiming IS. As it happens I came off IS due to starting a degree after the second interview anyway.

There are childminders as well as nurseries. Childminders have to jump through quite a lot of hoops to be able to do the job. They can't just wake up one morning and decide to be one.

My Daughter has 2 children under 5 years She has been looking for a childminder but because one is under 2 years no child minder will take him they are happy to take the one that is 4 years old but not the one under 2 because of this it is nan and grandad who look after them so mum can go to work What is doing to happen to all the single mun who do not have help from family

Rambling Report 13 Nov 2010 13:09

I do think that if single parents of an under 5 are wanting to work then every help should be given...but by the same token leaving a child with someone else just because you are compelled to work ( and if you have no family who IS the 'someone else' you give care of your child to?

fine in areas where there are GOOD nurseries, no good if you have to leave it with an unqualified 'other person' who has not been checked ( not that that always guarantees anything! there are too many nurseries etc where the standards are abysmal).

Reporting every six months is one thing, I wouldn't, didn't object to that...to be given help in looking towards the future, it is how much coercion that is then applied to take a job, any job, that worries me.

Cat, just quickly because I'm unscrewing a cupboard lol

It did say she had other children, however it didn't say how old or if they might have been disbled etc...which might account for IS instead of JSA.

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 13 Nov 2010 08:08

I am despairing of the way this country is going, cutbacks at hospitals so a worry for all of us if we end up there, budgets cut for policing so law and order is out the window, any little bits of progress like more bobbies on the beat etc will be changed yet again, expensive things set up are being abandoned, like the money poured into Great Yarmouth for a new harbour for freight, now the cranes have been removed as there is little call for them, the big idea belly flopped badly!

Amanda, I watched that programme about the sweatshops in Leicester, it was horrifying to see how the people were being exploited and how the companies are being duped. Also the cost of the clothes, was it 90p for a pair of leggings that are selling for many times that amount. Someone is raking it in and we are all being taken for fools. There is so much corruption and dishonesty around and the people at the top aren't really bothered as long as they get their money. Philip Green, the chap from Arcadia? who the government are using to help guide them through certain areas I believe, wouldn't talk about the corruption in Leicester, I bet he knew about it and was just paying lip service to the rules and regulations as many others are.

I was steaming mad after I watched the prog - I mentioned it on another thread yesterday.

It doesnt surprise me that 90% of 2012 merchandise is being imported. Companies have been outsourcing from the far east especially China for years, cos of the cheap labour & overhead costs.

Manufacturing companies in the UK tend to manufacture specialist products these days.

I have to say it worries me, the state of the country, it is always a sign of terrible times when the pawn brokers and exorbitant loan companies are the only ones on the up and up.

This makes no sense to me

"Vaughtons, the Birmingham-based company which made the Olympic and Paralympic medals for the 1908 London Games, were overlooked despite bidding for the lucrative contract of producing best-selling lapel pin badges.
But the contract went instead to Chinese company Honav, who manufactured the badges for the Beijing Games."

why could they not have been made here even if they were a bit more expensive?

Rambling

Rambling Report 12 Nov 2010 21:47

ah here it is

"It is being billed as an Olympics that will leave a legacy for all of Britain.

But manufacturers in this country may not agree after it was revealed that more than 90 per cent of souvenirs being sold for London 2012 are being made abroad.

Of the 424 items on sale on the official website for the flagship Games, just 40 - fewer than one in ten - are manufactured here.

Instead, about 65 per cent are produced in China and 19 per cent in Turkey, with only 9 per cent bearing the ‘Made in Britain’ hallmark.
