Sent to Coventry

When I was a kid we had an expression "sent to Coventry" which meant that no-one spoke to you. Does anyone know where this expression originated from?
Or have I been sent there for some reason?
Might as well give up my GR membership as things are at moment.
Unless of course you know any different?.........

People were "sent to Coventry" often during Union disputes, where a person worked when his oppo's were on strike. so he/she was sent to coventry and no one would dare speak to them. often spilling over into private life time as in addition to working hours.
