Took a lovely basket of flowers to the seaman's mission today for my uncle who was killed in action on the 14/11/1944 aged 20. This has been done since he died, my nana used to do it and then my mother after nana died. When my mam died i kept the tradition on, but sadly it wasnt open today. Just a notice saying its only open week days, this has really upset me as i like to look at the book with his name in it and all the other men who gave their lives for our freedom. Now i dont know what to do with the flowers apart from just leaving them in my sitting room. Just doesnt seem the same.

That is so sad, you would have thought that it would have been kept open today of all days.
Prehaps you could take the flowers tomorrow, I know its not the same but such a shame not to take them in memory of your Uncle.

Thanks Teresa, i supose i will take them tomorrow, but, like u say its not the same. The page in the book is turned every day and i'm now wondering what day its on today. Bet its not showing the 14/11/1944.

Maybe when you go tomorrow you can ask the curator if you can see the page and have a few minutes with your thoughts

Very sad but probably a sign of the times that they cant get staff to work on a Sunday.i am sure the flowers will stil be OK tomorrow if you can get there

Frustrating for you but it will have just as much meaning if you take them tomorrow, the tradition will still be fulfilled.

Goodness Shims, lovely to see you, hope all is well with you?

I'm afraid it's a sign of the times MC.

Let's hope they'll be open tomorrow.

It should be on 15th November......i don't think the year makes a difference.

Just a quick update, went back to the Seaman's Mission and hey presto, it was open. Took the flowers into the chapel, the book of rememberance wasnt open on the right page, so i put it on the right page myself, Saw my uncles name, took a lot of pics and came out feeling better than yesterday. RIP Uncle Tommy. xxx

Good that you could move the page to see your Uncle's name and message, and now you have pics too. You have several visits now before the day falls on a Sunday again so you won't have to worry in future.

My parent's details at the Crematorium are on their Wedding Anniversary date which is just after Christmas but the book is locked open under glass as the place is not attended when open. The room is always full of flowers and plants from families remembering people at Christmas, even if not 'their' date so it's always difficult to find a space to put flowers. Instead I put a few on my daughter's grave in the same cemetery and keep the rest at home where they constantly bring my parent's to mind.

Glad you feel better about the memorial now.
