I never understand why people want to persuade anyone to believe in these things or to dissuade anyone from believing in them. Why can't people just be content with how they feel about things?

Annie, several years ago I had a similar experience with two ladies from London who came to the Spiritualist church in Norwich to do a demonstration, they didn't know me from Adam, or knew I would be in the audience. One sketched the person she saw while the other spoke about that person. From what the woman said I was convinced it was my mother coming through and she spoke of Mum's ailments and her budgie and other things, and she mentioned I was doing a lot of cleaning at the time. I had been helping a friend who couldn't keep up with her housework because of her busy job and I had always been alone in the house when working. The woman spoke of Mum saying I had to stop polishing the step at the top of the stairs! I knew exactly what she meant as a few days previously I had sprayed polish on my duster and cleaned spilled coffee off the white painted wooden threshold of the bedroom at the top of the stairs ( a terraced house with stairs up the middle and a wooden threshold on each side into the bedrooms.) Usually if my friend had spilled her coffee there I would wash it off but being lazy that day I polished it off and later slipped as I walked on the threshold, thought to my self oops, must wash it in future, not polish! Now I hadn't mentioned it to anyone and no one saw me do the polishing bit so the message definitely convinced me Mum had been watching me work, lol When I went to get the pic, the woman remarked on how like my mother I am but she couldn't see me well enough to draw me and the likeness was really my Mum, no doubt about it. She even said 'Oh this lady always looks serious and wears hats when she goes out, and that was true too.

not wanting to detract from the believers ,but my idea of a spiritual medium is on a similar line to Merlins'
Ie a can of coke diluted copiously with a bottle of rum........

I too went to a meeting a few years back.Went with a open mind with a few of the girls from work.It was a lady that could hear and a man that could see.At first the man started to draw a man that the lady was talking to.Asking questions to the public eg this man had breathing problems when he died. Some woman said her grandad had, had a heart attack etc.As the picture became more clearer it looked like the only photo i had of my grandad. My mum was adopted as her mum died when she was 3.I then claimed him and the woman came over to me and started saying Jack,Jim,George, thinking my grandsons said yes. Then she said Dolly and Ann.Omg i started shaking and asked her to stop. These were my mums brothers and Dolly is my mum.I got to keep the picture which was identical to his photo.Brilliant night if i had not been scared Annie
PS Grandad died of TB

Ignore that BC :)) 'Proper' mediums wouldn't ( even if they knew) tell you of your demise. I have known so many people who have been told 'when' they are going...and all of them were around years after lol.

About 40 years ago I was told by a medium in Singapore that I would die in the year 2010. At the time I just laughed as it seemed a long time away. In fact it became a family joke and I thought I might perhaps have a heart attack watching Ireland win the World Cup! lol

And then about 3 weeks ago as I was just about to have a major operation, I suddenly thought about the premonition. But, as you will see,I am still here:-) so yah boo sucks to that medium! Mind you I am staying indoors until the end of the year....just in case!

If it gives solace, sobeit, however there are charlatans out there and all I can say is attend a Spiritulist Church, and perhaps a development circle. You will not be ripped off. Just the usual church collection plate up to you if you leave a £1 coin or 5p.

If the person involved gets comfort and happiness from it, ok, but slightly concerned that if it is to communicate with someone that has died, it may not help the natural healing process of grief.

Someone I know goes to meeting every week, and one week when her Father didnt 'come through' she was inconsolable. It is this sort of thing that concerns me greatly.

I think each to their own. I've visited three and went to see one at a theatre.

The latter appeared to be very professional and undramatic and I'd read her books, so was interested to see her. She didn't speak to me so I can't comment on whether she had a genuine gift.

The first two I went to see back in the late 80s weren't much cop. One was apparently world famous and the reading was rubbish. The second was a lovely old gypsy lady who seemed to home in on how I was feeling but her predictions didn't come true - charming and perceptive but I didn't feel there was any real gift.

Went to see the third one about five years ago. Very ordinary woman who was honest in that she was still very much learning and I felt she had a definite insight at least into the past and into a couple of people I have lost.

I'm very open minded about it - if it gives people comfort, I can't see what harm it does but, like everything else in life, needs to be taken with a measure of common sense:)
