Huia,
How right you (and the book) are, in my opinion.
I quote from a Primary School homework website (only cos I love it)

"The worst cold spells in Britain occurred between 1550 and 1750. The climate during this time was known as the Little Ice Age, when winters were so cold that the Thames froze over each year. It was not uncommon for the freeze to last over three months, as in the case of the winters of 1683 - 1684 and 1715 - 1716"

This was pre Industrial Revolution.

Droughts can be caused by the jet stream moving . Contrary to the belief of Canute and many Governments, coasts, warm waterflow (ie the Gulf Stream) and phenomenon created by the seas are NOT static!!!!

Oh - and to add to Bob's reply, building over 'old' reservoirs doesn't help the water supply, and building on water meadows creates an awful lot of flooding too. When you think, boggy land is 'drained' on the edge of and ancient village (many medieval houses) - and a new housing estate is built. Suddenly - after all these years the village floods.
Do they blame the planners? - that boggy land was boggy for a reason!
Of course not - it's Global Warming.
Sometimes makes you wonder whether planners have a basic grasp of Geology /Topography/Physics (gravity etc) the reasons for ancient actions (ie why did no-one drain the land before) and the English language!!

LOL Merlin,

Then a methane igniter strapped to each herbivore's/fartist's rear end might do us some favours eh?

Merlin Report 27 Nov 2010 14:04

Lots of that are true Bob.but there are other things which contribute to it such as "Herbivors" they expel more Methane gas than anything else ( Except Vegitarians) so if everybody stopped farting the world would be a better place and smell nicer. **M**.:o)>

Global warming doesn't mean that you will all be sweating sitting on your verandahs....it means that the arctic ice wont freeze so hardand parts of it wont freeze at all thus causing water levels to rise,
we have always had flooding, more so now because too many rivers have been shored up and diverted to make way for housing,
deforestation of the tropical rain forest is another factor in the game instead of the rain being re cycled as the weather moves across the country, it now falls on what is virtually a dust bowl

in the old days when rain fell, it soaked into the ground, nowadays with millions of square mile of "earth" covered in concrete means that this rainwater is now diverted into rivers that have been "doctored " to suit housing and agricultural needs .
THATS why so many rivers are bursting their banks..just think of, say super markets and great warehouses the size of several football pitches
acres and acres of roof space pouring their rainfall into drains feeding these swollen rivers........"you" do away with your front garden and block pave it so you can park your car on it.......more rain in the drain!!

any way thats MY opinion.........

I am currently reading a book "heaven+earth - global warming: the missing science" by Ian Plimer. He points at that not so many years ago the experts were telling us we were heading for an ice age. Now they are telling us the opposite. We have had ice ages and warming for thousands of years, in fact longer, and those early ones werent caused by the human race.

I wont be able to finish the book, my son brought it up here for the weekend and he will be going home tomorrow so unless I stay up all night reading which I dont intend to do, then I will get only so far, unless I can get it from the library.

Huia.

I'm with you there, Emma.
Weren't we told the temperature would rise by 2 degrees - and the world would cme to an end - or something like that?

Although, according to today's Daily Mail - global warming is slowing down - thanks to new industries in Asia belching out sulphur and other pollutants..
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1333225/Global-warming-slowing-say-scientists.html

I'm sure I've been told by 'experts' over the years that it was/is pollution that was causing Global Warming.

Oh well, I suppose it kept someone employed and over paid.

'Emma' Report 26 Nov 2010 11:44

Mick lucky you but, is it warmer than usual?
Amy then I got it wrong, thought it was supposed
to get warmer here.
