our country in a panic. I know Canada and such (yes I do realise they get more snow) have snow tyres but as a child in the forties, I can remember my father using snow chains on his car. We lived in a city with steep hills all around on whiich the housing was built. Never seem to hear or see car chains in use now. Just googled and Halfords sell them |

I think you can only use them if the snow is a certain depth or they damage the road surface. |

Halfrauds may well sell them but i think you will find they are illegal to use on tarmac roads. |

Sick and tired of the local Councils bleating that ' due to UNFORSEEN winter weather' they have run out of grit.or salt. |

Really pees me off that the local/county council grit the nearby motorway (which of course, they should), but never grit pavements or the roads on housing estates - which is, of course, where there is a great concentration of Council tax paying 'locals'! |

Why not thicker tread tyres or snow tyres as they are called? |

what I meant Sandie is that unlike the canadians' weather, ours is not severe enough for our powers that be to make proper plans, as was said we cant use chains because the snow is for the most part not deep enough.....of course drivers COULD invest in a set of snow wheels. but they might never get used? |

Years ago you used to be able to by "Town and Country Tyres" which in the winter you usually fitted on your rear wheels.( Spare wheels and tyres did,nt cost so much then) made it much easier in bad weather.the trouble is lots of people have,nt driven in really bad weather and don,t know how to.this adds to problems. the Local Councils are a joke, lots are still awaiting deliveries of salt for the roads,(Probably did,nt order it till it started snowing)We,ve got a couple of inches of the white stuff here and more to come, but it should,nt be a problem.**M**.Ps. Stew and Dumplings tonight. |
