our country in a panic. I know Canada and such (yes I do realise they get more snow) have snow tyres but as a child in the forties, I can remember my father using snow chains on his car. We lived in a city with steep hills all around on whiich the housing was built. Never seem to hear or see car chains in use now. Just googled and Halfords sell them

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 26 Nov 2010 21:12

I think you can only use them if the snow is a certain depth or they damage the road surface.

McB

McB Report 26 Nov 2010 21:18

Halfrauds may well sell them but i think you will find they are illegal to use on tarmac roads.

Newbs

Newbs Report 26 Nov 2010 21:20

Don,t think we go into a panic anymore.
There is a problem if roads are not gritted because Councils cannot afford it. or don't react until it is too late.
That leaves everyone trying to earn a living who pay for this eventuality high and dry.

JoyBoroAngel Report 26 Nov 2010 21:30

we have terrible snow here
even the cat wont go out unless it has to
but everything is carrying on as normal
we are well used to it here

Newbs

Newbs Report 26 Nov 2010 21:37

Sick and tired of the local Councils bleating that ' due to UNFORSEEN winter weather' they have run out of grit.or salt.
We the UK get snow .. we have had snow for the last three years that have affected our roads and brought work to a standstill
Bet that this year we will still get the same lame excuse.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 26 Nov 2010 21:50

Really pees me off that the local/county council grit the nearby motorway (which of course, they should), but never grit pavements or the roads on housing estates - which is, of course, where there is a great concentration of Council tax paying 'locals'!
Which means that those who live in areas where they consider pedestrians and 'local' roads can get to work, but muggins here is left housebound, using leave up because I can't get to work.

...Irony is, I work for the bloody County Council!!!!

Newbs

Newbs Report 26 Nov 2010 22:04

Waits for the same darned excuse ' unforseen extreme weather conditions' reads as
we have 'underestimated again the amount of salt required this year' .. in other words
'fingers crossed , although you suckers have already paid for this in case it happens . we are betting on a mild winter'
then there is the Government bleating on about supporting UK workers and businesses
But the water suppliers ar really quick to impose hosepipe bans in the summer before the supposed droughts even appear.

Why not thicker tread tyres or snow tyres as they are called?

maggiewinchester Report 27 Nov 2010 00:20

I don't mind the snow - it's the next day when it's turned to ice that bothers me.
I've just looked for snow grips for shoes on the internet - and most (apart from amazon) appear to be sold out until December!!!!

Dear All

Hello

Hope you are okay.

To all our snowbound friends, please take gentle care
of yourselves.

In London, we are still waiting for the snow!

Very best wishes

Bob,

Speak for yourself !

Just been looking at photos (to show my new neighbours of their houses I'd photographed , when we had to climb out of the bedroom window--bungalow ) Snow 6ft deep front and back doors impossible to get out of, fortunately it had drifted away from one of the windows.

When it snows we get it thick and fast, snowed in for days sometimes weeks, and whenever the forecaster says 'Snow on high ground' we get it.

Just hope we escape this time.. it's about 4inches deep ,hubby and son , good drivers both just managed to get the cars home and on the drive.

We get enough of it and often enough, unfortunately.
Pity the council don't react soon enough!

Sandie.

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 27 Nov 2010 01:31

what I meant Sandie is that unlike the canadians' weather, ours is not severe enough for our powers that be to make proper plans, as was said we cant use chains because the snow is for the most part not deep enough.....of course drivers COULD invest in a set of snow wheels. but they might never get used?

Years ago you used to be able to by "Town and Country Tyres" which in the winter you usually fitted on your rear wheels.( Spare wheels and tyres did,nt cost so much then) made it much easier in bad weather.the trouble is lots of people have,nt driven in really bad weather and don,t know how to.this adds to problems. the Local Councils are a joke, lots are still awaiting deliveries of salt for the roads,(Probably did,nt order it till it started snowing)We,ve got a couple of inches of the white stuff here and more to come, but it should,nt be a problem.**M**.Ps. Stew and Dumplings tonight.

I don't mind the snow as I lived in Scotland for the last 3yrs and got used to it!! It's the ice i'm not so keen on as i'm not to good on my feet as it is...

But hey, we can't change the weather so we just have to go with it....

Bad news Annina, so you won't be interested in this news - re safety - appartently some ambulance service are fitting what is called a sleeve to their tyres so may be they are available for cars too.
