I care very much what *some* people think of me.

There are some whose opinions really don't matter at all to me. It's important that those I like and respect feel the same way but why should I care about the opinions of those I have no respect for?

Used to. Reckoned that up to 20 you worry about what is the right thing to do, up to 30 worry about what people think, up to 40 becoming more confident. By 40 decided you are who you are. Only thing that would upset me still is if I get accused in the wrong about anything. Those I do not like I avoid.

Rambling Report 28 Nov 2010 13:32

well it is, because both of us are old enough to know 'who we are' , so if other people get us 'wrong' it should be a case of saying it's their problem ...but I don't like it when people get me wrong, if they just don't like me that's fine...as long as they are basing that dislike on the real me, not a false impression, or what they have gleaned second-hand.

That's true Gwynne, there are people whose opinion of me I care very much about...because I see them as people of personal integrity I hate to 'fall short' in their eyes.

If someone cares about me then I know they like me so dont have to worry about it.

Them that matter matter,,them that dont dont.

I think it is normal to want to be respected and liked by family and friends so yes I do care what they think about me.

Casual aquaintances and people I don't know, as long as I am being true to myself and not doing anything wrong in my eyes or the eyes of my family then what they think is immaterial to me.

A line I read in a book today (I have just searched for it for this thread) struck me.
"If you spent your life concentrating on what everyone else thought of you, would you forget who you really were? What if the face you showed the world turned out to be a mask..... with nothing beneath it?"

Fred, you have obviously lived your life well if you have brought up two lovely children and had a happy marriage. Have you thought (I know you said you are a private person but this might help) asking for counselling on your horrific experience as a child. Which was not your fault? Maybe it is not too late to talk it out of your system.

when i was in my 20s i guess i did worry what people thought of me, my dress, behaviour, etc. but as i grew older, wiser and more confident, i dont worry anymore. who cares if my style of dress isnt the current fashion or my hairstyle, or that i prefer to stay in and come on here rather than going down the pub. it really doesnt matter what anyone thinks of yourself as long as you are happy with yourself.

frank, i was troubled to read about you most unfortunate episode in your younger days, but am pleased that you managed to meet someone, marry and have a family of your own. that must be something you wondered if it was ever going to happen years ago.

maybe if you were to talk through this with someone , you may be able to put some closure on it for good.

i wish you well

I don't particularly care about what people think of me except for my family and close friends. I appear to get on with most people but sometimes in the work I do I don't always make decisions that please everyone all of the time. That's just the way it goes.

Frank - I'm sorry for the unpleasant experience that appears to have coloured your life. Bringing up two wonderful children is something to be proud of.
