My great grandfather was George Henry Davis (abt 1840) born at Chatteris in Cambridgeshire. I can't find a birth record ,so far, for him.
I know from his marriage cert (1861 to Jane Thurborn) that his father was also called George.I know from his death cert that he died in 1885 aged 44.
Unhelpfully, the 1841 Census gives 2 George Davis both with fathers called George and both born at Chatteris.one aged 1 and the other aged 2.
Can anyone out there with more experience suggest how you could work out which one is 'mine'? Or is this a brick wall?

Can you find them in 1851? and do the father's have different occupations, what is it on the marriage cert ?

Answering own question they are both labourers, so that doesn't help a lot! On the marriage cert is there any clue from the names of witnesses? maybe connected to one family or the other?

As i don't have access to the census this might discount one of them for you

The witnesses on the marriage cert are Hannah Day and Oliver Dring Angood.
Will also look again at the cfhs website - must have missed this entry....probably very late at night!
I guessed that he had married twice but have also been unable so to find Lydia Davis death. Maybe she was known as Lydia but it wasn't her actual name? Or I have missed it.
The misspelling of Davis (Devis) is interesting.....

You could search the original parish records for a baptisms as usually after 1813 they contain an address so that might distinquish between the two Georges.
If you can't get to the records office yourself someone on here might be able to help or check for an online parish clerk

and one to an Elizabeth Whims in AMJ 1843 which are good possibilities?

Sandra I got the George Devis birth from above link, then tried FreeBMD. looks like it varied from one to the other! :-)) Quite a lot of Independent Chapels round that Fenland area, where baptisms took place.

What I did notice is that on the later census there are quite a few entries with the Devis spelling from March, which is just down the road from Chatteris ( I used to live there). Might be worth looking at those sometime to see if there is a connection.

I am so pleased to have made some progress tonight.
I live near Lands End - which is a long way from anywhere. I have never been to Cambridgeshire so I am planning a trip in the spring!

I have ordered a birth cert from the Cambridgeshire.gov.uk site for George Devis with fingers crossed that it's him.
Yes we have had snow - my mother -in-law didn't see snow til she was 22 so a fairly rare event here.
Von -My husband runs a pub The North Inn Pendeen- there's a website-it's only 8about miles from Sennen so may see you next year?
