About an hour ago, we had had dinner and were having a cup of tea while watching the telly when the kettle switched itself on, my phone has bleeped a text message bleep but there aren't any, weird or what!

Dermot, I haven't read it all yet but my sister and I are both in my house, we both heard the kettle switch itself on and it is only 3 weeks ago that our Dad died.

I once had a dream about my dad who died when I was only four. When I woke up I went downstairs to make a cup of coffee, always my first job of the day. The electric kettle was already very hot as if it had just finished boiling. I was the only one in the house. It didn't bother me but it may have done had it been in the night when it was dark.

re the kettle switching on, I've had that a lot, but there is a reason for it. ( assuming it is a kettle on a base not a whistling one on the hob of course lol) .

Sometimes the kettle is put back on the base at a very fine fraction of an angle, just enough so that it makes connection and starts up....but, it will loose the connection as it starts to boil, I assume the vibration does that, then as it has cooled and is 'still' it re-connects and starts up again. It's a bit of a surprise the first time it happens though!

Yeah, you're right - a visit from a departed spirit,
is far more likely than a power surge, loose connection,
or any other logical explanation,

This was a long time ago before the days when electric kettles had bases. It just had a lead one end plugged into the socket on the wall and the other end plugged into the kettle.

I like ti think it was my dad paying me a visit!
