Thanks everyone for your kind messages. I have been thinking of the family in Malta all yesterday and hope things went off as ok as possible.
My son sent a message to his half bro saying he was thinking of them all and wishing he could have been there to pay his respects, his bro sent a message back but son didn't say what it was as he was in a rush when I spoke with him and got distracted by a caller at the door.

What with remembering Joyce and Nanna, I got to wondering about if they meet up, my Mum and Dad too - would be nice for my son's two Nans to meet and maybe there is no language barrier whereever they are.

I am so very sorry, my condolences go to you all.

I forgot to mention that coincidentally, today is the first anniversary of the funeral of my Dad's lovely cousin from Banbury, who died in early 2010 aged 89. She gave me so much info about our family that I would never have learned from anyone else, for which I am eternally grateful.

It's also my cousin's 81st birthday today so a date that I will always remember. Sometimes her birthday falls on or close to Shrove Tuesday which is Pancake Day but this year Shrove Tuesday falls on March 8th.

I couldn't sleep so came down for a cuppa
I keep thinking about her and the family in Malta, whose lives really revolved around her and she them. She looked after them all so well when she was younger. When I first met my son's Dad she was coming over to his house to bring his clean laundry back that she had washed and ironed, and coming on the bus, bless her. That was thirty years ago this year so she would have been in her early fifties and had already been widowed for quite a while. Her husband was a Policeman so they had a Police supplied flat not far from the Police Station where another friend of mine (female) is now a Sergeant. There were six sons, and finally a daughter, all in a very small maisonette type flat with lots of stairs up to the front door. The eldest son left for England when he was 16 and met an Essex girl and they are the ones we are in touch with most, they have three daughters and three granddaughters, a grandson and another grandbaby on the way soon. My son was the first grandson and then two more arrived, his half brother and cousin both in Malta. His half brother is ten years and 4 days younger than my lad.

I think the uncle and aunt here had already booked their flight when they heard Nanna was in hospital and became unconscious, and they live nearer the airports. There are no flights from Norwich for Malta during the winter and son didn't know she was in hospital again, his father never bothers to tell him anything, barely keeps in touch altho the half brother sometimes communicates through fb. Son said he was posting as normal on Thursday evening which is strange but was perhaps his way of dealing with things, he hadn't bothered to tell my son what was happening. My son's dad only sent a message on his brother's mobile, hadn't bothered phoning the landline to tell them she was in hospital and texted later to say she was unconscious. I presume he bothered to actually speak to his brother here when she died. Funny chap, my son's dad.

I think my son and I will visit his aunt and uncle in Essex sometime soon, his uncle is very fond of my lad and they accept me very kindly even tho I am not a legal inlaw.

My sympathy on the loss of Nana. I remember you telling us about her and her struggles with ill health. As you say, she was a walking timebomb. RIP Nana.

Sorry to hear of your sons Nana's passing. What a shame he couldn't have gone along to her funeral with his uncle. xx

I am sorry to hear about your son's Nana Liz, I remember you writing about her before. I believe in some countries it is the law that burials/cremations take place very quickly after death.
