Jude, you know Phil has a bowel problem too, but his doesnt seem to be food causing it. just as a thought, look up autonomic neuropathy on the net and see what the symptoms are. It can occur in non diabetics too. funny you should say about an itch, my back scratcher has never been so much used and I reckon it was one of the athsma inhalers I was given.

Thank you Sylvia :o)
Its surprising how much there is to read and check, its definately experimental at the moment, yesterday and Fri l was itching on my right shoulder and just below...grr, that could have been the soya.
Goats milk in tea is fine and on cereals. l do miss soya on cereals:o(

Manufacturers are very crafty, all they want is to sell products!

Take care

I have an intolerance to all dairy products, which I developed about 6 years ago, after a major stomach upset.

I have discovered that the difference between an allergy and an intolerance can be classified as follows:-

reaction if an allergy happens within 30 minutes, and no longer than 60 minutes after ingesting the food

reaction if an intolerance happens after 3-4 hours and upto 36-48 hours after ingestion of the food.

an allergic reaction can be life threatening

an intolerance is never life threatening.

In my case, I react almost exactly 4 hours after eating dairy, and the reaction lasts almost exactly 4 hours. I get very fed-up of the bathroom!!

I can drink soy milk ......... but it tastes awful in tea and coffee!

So I have moved to herbal teas. And the only coffee I can drink is in the form of lattes, with a large sprinkling of cinnamon on the top to help mask the taste of the soy!

yet I love soy milk on cereals!

But Jude ........ do be careful when buying food. Check, and regularly re-check, ingredients on the labels.

I discovered this morning that fine liver sausage contains "modified milk ingredients".

That's been one of my lunch alternatives for a couple of years ....... it did not contain milk ingredients the last time I checked the label!

Manufacturers can and do change ingredients ................... I've had it happen with bought cookies, canned soups, etc etc

Jude, try drinking tea made the usual way, but substitute hot water where you would have had milk. I had to avoid dairy produce while I was preparing for the scan, and thats the way I can drink it. One of my step-sisters, who was as thin as a rake, never drank tea any other way. Dont rforget that you are supposed to keep up your fluid intake for your brains sake!

Hello...... yes definately l understand there is a big difference and mine is an intolerance ,sorry if l keep using the word allergy, l do it automatically, sorry:o(

It must be very difficult for people that have so many intolerances. Yes l think your right IGP most people do have an intolerance of some kind, my OH does and chooses to ignore it which l have done for yrs but must sort it now.

Ann...l don't like peppermint or fruit teas, l tried them years ago, may try again if they are strong tasting. l'm drinking ordinary tea at the moment with goats milk, not bad:o)....but l ought to cut down on the amount of tea l have, its usually between 6 - 10 cups a day:o(((((

Jill, I think you have hit the nail on the head. An allergy is not the same as an intolerance.

I mentioned it to Mrs IGP who studied the subject whilst qualifying as a Pharmacy Technician, back in the 1970's and she agreed wholeheartedly..

An allergy is a serious, sometimes life threatening reaction, whereas an intolerance is little more than an inconvenience.

Lets not confuse the two.

JustDinosaurJill Report 26 Feb 2011 17:20

As has already been mentioned, an allergy is not the same as an intollerence.

My son is 100% intollerent to Gluten ie wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt and 100% intollerent go Casein ie all milk and milk products.

He also has problems with a mass of other things which includes some red fruits, e-numbers, additives, artificial sweetners and preserving and stabilising ingredients like you get in squash.

I make all his cakes and bread and pancakes using a basic flour mix of 4 parts rice flour, 1 part tapioca starch and 1 part potato flour or potato starch. To replace the elasticity which the gluten provides I use Xanthn Gum from a brand I know to be gluten free. I also use baking powder with a white lid not a red lid on the carton.

Although I don't have the same level of problems my son has, I don't do well with white bread or a lot of pasta so I don't make a habit of eating it.

One tip that really does work for spotting intollerences is look at someone's ears. My friend's son had bright read ears that shone like a lighthouse if he touched gluten. The reaction doesn't have to be quite that noticeable but it really does work.

I'm happy to post cake and bread recipes if anyone would like them. I promise you they are much nicer than you pay the earth for in the shop. And you can be certain they really are 'safe' for you.

Most people are allergic to something or other, but in many cases are never aware.

Certain nuts, and unripe fruit, especially bananas and tomatoes affect Mrs IGP who often feels as though she has indigestion, after eating them. Her tongue sometimes swells up and cracks too. It usually only last for an hour and then she is back to normal. It was years before she worked out what it was.

Some years ago I knew a chap who was allergic to plain water. The only way that he could drink it was diluted with Scotch.

KempinaPartyhat

KempinaPartyhat Report 26 Feb 2011 12:23

Prehaps you should try rice milk ....and also look at the milk products as some are made with apple juice !!! I know mad!!

Do check out the sites as they do dairy free stuff......and the stuff changes often to meet the seasonal needs ..

Good Luck
