Oh Boy I never really thought about hitching lifts as "wild" or dangerous considering I did it so much ..but yes as I got older and the times have changed I certainly would not recommend as a means of transport. I did hitch once at the age of 16 from Glos to Cornwall with my parents knowledge . Mind they did frown on my other jaunts via the thumb.

Like SpanishEyes my friend and I hitched a lift from Yorkshire with the hope of landing in London. After a few lifts we found ourselves on a lorry going to Banbury then onto Lyme Regis. We decided that as we had a lift we would go there instead of London. We slept on a beach and during the night some people were fishing in the dark and we could hear them crunching on the pebbles. I remember a dog walking past us and it never noticed us in our sleeping bags. We then spent a day at Bournmouth and then went hitching again and landed in Winchester. A lovely couple took us to the YWCA and I can remember it cost us £7 for the night which was totally out of our budget. The following morning the same couple came back and said they were going to London and did we want a lift,so we did eventually arrive there. We thought we were so 'cool' wandering round Canaby Street but if I thought either of my children had done such a stupid thing I would not be best pleased. I daren't even tell you what happened when my friend and I decided to go to France on another jaunt.....I shudder to think about it all these years later.....jle

This is absolutely true.
Many years ago whilst I was training as a nurse in a very well known hospital in the east end of London I was n a bus with my parents to go to my grandmas,tomb where we where going to add some flowers.

As the buus pulled up for a red light I happened to look out of the window and saw a body on the the front garden of a house. Young & innocent I jumped off the bus to go and help, I could hear my father calling my name and as a crouched beside this man I saw two very well built men also looking at him, They picked him up and told nme to come with him and just as my dad caught up with me one of the men closed the door of the house and there I was with one man who could die at any minute from a gunshot wound and the other two being members of a verywell known east end gang!!

well I survived and so did the man who had been shot! fortunately the local police station was a short distance away and the front door was broken down by them and we were rescued.......

I will not say much more but it was an amazing experience and as far as I am concerned these criminals where very polite and especially to a "nurse" even if she was only a student at the time.
Maybe I wasn't brave just but not worldly wise....

A VERY GOOD FEELING

Well, until I read these posts, I thought the wildest thing I had done was give up a nice flat and a job in the diplomatic service,with prospects, to go and live in a tent in the Shetlands and clean crabs!!

Don't know about wildest, but one of the most satisfying things I have done was threaten a racist!
Walking home one night in Portsmouth, in the late '70's, black tights,leather coat and amazing afro, I felt a thump on my head.
Lad on a bike told me to (in no uncertain terms) 'go back home'.
Slightly confused by this (I was, after all, on my way back to my flat,and had just been kicked in the head), I looked to my side, at which point, I could see he was preparing to gob at me. He, rather amazed to (I suppose) not see what he expected (ie a black face) wobbled and fell off his bike.

I ran towards him. I was in time. He was still a bit dazed
I Non too carefully placed my rather high platform on his head and asked him to repeat what he had said to me.
Then came the interrogation.
Why had he said that?
Why had he kicked me?
Was it racist,or didn't he like afro hairstyles?
What was so special about him or his hairstyle that prevented me from kicking him in the head?
I didn't like his hairstyle.

How far back was he sure of his heritage - or even his parentage?
Was he born a moron-or had he been practising?
Now apologise to me.....and to all the other's he had racially abused (which he did).

He had to promise me he would go to the opticians the next day -as he obviously had some sort of problem inseeing beyond his own ar*ehole.

Now I had the problem of getting home without him following or attacking me.
I asked him his name - he gave me some name,not sure if it was his. I thanked him, and pointed out that he had a lovely bike and I could describe it to any policeman. I suggested he go back the way he came, and was more careful in future, as my white male friends were big - but the black ones were bigger.!

Never heard/saw him again!! LOL

one weekend, myself and 3 friends went to our local cinema. the car park was full and time was running out so we thought we would park in a private car park as it was the weekend and everybody had gone home.

we drove in and the barrier went up and we parked the mini and went off to watch the film.

when we returned about 10.30 pm, what none of us realised was you needed a special key to open the barrier on exit. doh !!!!

panic set in and after a couple of tel calls to oh and male friends, they came to our rescue. the only way out was to lift the mini up and over the flower beds, onto the pavement and onto the road. yep after a lot of heaving and panting, one mini was back on the road.

we took the lads to a pub for last orders and of course we paid the bill.

strangley people were walking past but no one questioned what we were doing.

when i told my dad he didnt believe me and asked if i was drunk and i said no dad stone cold sober for a change lol.

my friends and i still laugh about it and still quite cant believe it, but it really happened.

That was silly Elaine - but sometimes we just do things like that without thinking.

I think I've just done it.I was on the puter and the ouside light went on. I am upstairs so saw the figure of a man walking through my yard. I ran downstairs and out onto the street and called to a figure in a hoody jacket. "Excuse me why have you been in my yard". He came towards me and said sorry I am looking for my mate Chris' house. Fortunately for me he was ok but I may have been bashed or even worse. 72 nearly and still havn't the sense I was born with. Elaine.

In September last year, at the age of 74, I did the Go-Ape treetop assault course in the Cannock Chase Forest. 30 feet in the air and a 300 yard zip slide two thirds of the way round. Two hours of terrifying torture but Yippee!! I loved it.

(Don't tell my family but I ached for a week afterwards).

Skinny dipping in a freezing cold lake above Chatsworth House.

After that I developed a liking for it and swam in all sorts of odd places without any clothes. One being a lake halfway up Snowdon,and another Lake Windermere.

However,nowadays am reluctant to go paddling even in the height of summer!!

When I was a student nurse I and a friend hitch hiked from east London to Yorkshire, Thinking back we were really silly but we were full of confidence. We arrived in the early hours of the morning and it was pitch black. We found a bench and laid down waiting for the morning when we were seen by a police man. He took us back to the police station and called his wife, after giving us a good telling off. He then sent us to his house where his dear wife gave us something to eat I think it was a bacon sandwich , allowed us to have a wash and gave us a bed for the rest of the night!

We went back to London on the train and we had a police man take us to the station to make sure that we did not hitch!! I know we did not have enough money to pay for the ticket and that policeman paid for us when he learnt that we were nurses..

First thing l can think of is ..... l ran away to join the circus!!!!! l did'nt like the way the elephants were being treated!!!!!

Scrumping and being chased by the local bobby ,still got a piece of tar in my knee from falling on the road
aged 12

Going to a Notts Forest match on the train and jumping off when the train slowed down coming in to the station so we wouldn't have to pay
( What an idiot ) 14 at the time.

Jumping on to a policeman's back at a protest
age 17

Taking 15 children on an impromptu picnic on the Hampshire downs and being rescued by Military Police when we got lost
aged 22

Catching a bus at Nottingham bus station and arriving in Australia 4 days later all by my self . I felt like a grown up
age 50
