I am with you on that Libby, mother nature is one thing but mans' intervention is another.

I see we have sent over a contingent to Japan now Huia and Susan, it is not going to be easy for them. I know they are trained but even so it is a lot worse than what has happened here.

We were down in Wellington the other night when there was a quake not far from us - we didn't even notice but my daughter did 25kms away - she said they could here it coming and it was quite a jolt but they are used to them. I think because of the valley we were in we were probably sheltered from it.

I too have been horrified by the devastation, as seen on TV. My thoughts are with everyone caught up in it.

One thing that puzzles me though is why have they built nuclear power stations in an area that is prone to earthquakes?

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 12 Mar 2011 10:40

And now there has been an explosion at one of the nuclear power reactors :(

It's awful to see such violent weather action and such, all those people going about their daily lives and now their lives, if they survived, will never be the same again.

My o.h.'s stepmum's brother lives and teaches somewhere in Japan, am hoping he and his family are ok, he has a Japanese wife and their teenage son.

I don't know what is happening to the world - so many tragedies, people starving and struggling to survive in some countries and others fighting earthquakes, Tsunamis, floods, fires and all sorts of disasters. My heart goes out to them all.

Huia Report 12 Mar 2011 03:42

And now a 6.1 off the coast of Tonga a couple of hours or so ago. I havent heard if there has been any damage though. It was probably deep enough (10km, I think) and far enough away to not shake the island too much.

Huia.

God bless everyone, no matter what God you believe in now is not the time to argue.
Stay safe and hug the kids a little harder.

The Japanese sent a team here to NZ to help with the searching for bodies after the Christchurch earthquake - we have a lot of Japanese students here. My next door neighbour is Japanese, so will pop over and see her later today. We will probably be sending a team over there now and offering as much help as we can. There are quite a lot of NZders in that area of Japan.

The first waves did hit up North but it did not cause any damage, but higher waves are expected over the next few hours so everyone is on guard.

Have watched the pictures coming onto the airwaves of the damage caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. My heart and prayers go out to all of the people involved.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Mar 2011 20:17

There has possibly been a second unrelated earthquake in Japan, near Nagano. It might be an aftershock from the first one, but it is on a different fault line. I haven't heard how strong it was, possibly about 6

I've also just heard on the radio that the coast of Japan has moved about eight FEET

There are 4 trains missing in the area affected by the tsunami ............. the rail company has lost all contact with them.

The outer coast of BC, Canada, is still under a Tsunami advisory.

Victoria and Vancouver are safe, because we are protected by Vancouver Island, but from Alaska to the northern tip of Haida Gwaii (aka Queen Charlotte Islands) south along the outer coast of Vancouver and then down to California is still at risk

Granted, the waves seen so far have been negligible, but later waves can be larger than the first ones to arrive. This is why the original Tsunami warning was downgraded to an advisory, which will remain in effect for several more hours

The first waves to hit Hawaii were:- 3 metre waves hit Kauai, 1 m waves hit Honolulu washing up onto roadways but not reaching hotels, and 2 m waves in Maui. Larger waves could still arrive.

The first waves hit on the Oregon coast about 90 minutes ago.

One danger not often noted is that the underwater currents become stronger, and more erratic ............... so there is a ban (as much as can be enforced!) on small boats going out to sea.

It really is hard to take in the devestation we are seeing.

A ship with 100 people on board has been swept away, two trains missing not to mention what we have witnessed.

So frightening for those in the thick of it. The death toll will be horrendous.

Our Tsunami warning has been extended for the next five hours. The sea rose by 15cm in the first wash. It is said the wash can get bigger. Hopefully we will be spared any devestation.

My thoughts to all those in Japan affected and those whose lives have been lost.

It's all been quite awful hasn't it. My Sister-in-law's family live in the Kagoshima area, so they are all safe, but even so, many more people are going through a dreadful time. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.

It certainly is difficult to take in.
There have been more shocks in the North West of Japan.
It's awful and our thoughts are with everyone in Japan

Persie

Such a worry for everyone, especially as it's expected so early in the morning.

I've just seen an alert on Google search page.
They are obviously trying to warn people by whatever means are possible.

I hope people have chance to take action and keep safe.
