Hey Bob, you can't go calling Jan an old codger, he is Joyce's toy boy! Mind you I think she puts years on the poor man sometimes lol

I would love to be a fly on the wall sometimes in their household!

Perhaps she should have hitched her skirt up, flashed a bit of leg and he would have given her a ride....

... goodness only knows what Jan would have done if he had been distracted probably mowed themselves into the wishing well.

ஐ+*¨^¨*+e+*¨^¨*+ஐ Mildred Honkinbottom Report 20 Mar 2011 10:21

Sounds funny but it can be tragic.

This started in Autumn 1992.

My Nan's wheel on her wheelchair went over Grandad's toe. He had wheeled her out into their tiny kitchen, up to the sink to wash her hair. Nan shifted the wheelchair back & caught his toe.

It was sore at first, but within a few days started to throb a bit. Eventually they called in the doc who dressed it properly.
This sore toe went on for weeks, mainly uncomfortable, but to an 86 year old man, it made walking more difficult.

After Xmas his toe started weeping around the nail, Again this was dressed by a visiting nurse. The throbbing got worse over the next few weeks & he ended up in hospital.

His toe had developed Dry Gangrene.

A few weeks later 6/3/1993 he passed away.

So as funny as it seems, it can turn nasty, so I hope Jans toe makes a swift recovery & any change or worsening is swiftly dealt with.

Can I ask Mildred did he suffer with diabetes at all?

I know of someone who had diabetes and she banged her foot ended up with gangrene and died. She did not have as good as innings as your grandad.

No he didn't, but at 86 I would imagine his circulation wasn't the best. :o((

On the DC it said

1) Dry Gangrene
2) Heart Failure

Poor Grandad was in such pain with his toe those last few weeks, and the pain in conjunction with painkillers & poison in his body affected his mind at times.

Whilst sitting in the chair, he kept on reaching down in a grabbing motion & grimacing.

Nans penny dropped, & she said he was trying to wring the chickens necks, like he did during the war for dinner!

At times those last weeks he drifted into a sort of waking dream :o((

Persephone Report 21 Mar 2011 09:38

Yes I know what you mean re circulation... I don't have the best circulation in the world ( I am not a diabetic) and hopefully I still have a good 20 years or so left.
My father used to get such cold feet. When he was in hospital I went to the hospital linen cupboard and got out an extra cuddly (flannelette) to wrap around them. When he was at home he used to throw this heavy overcoat (he called his lambie) onto the bed. He was a tough old bird was a bushman in his younger days and used to sleep in a hut and he managed to persuade a feral cat to come and keep his feet warm at night. He lived to over 93 and like your granddad would spend the last few weeks drifiting off and he would be waving his arms around...

Sori Liz I know this is Joyce's thread but I will e-mail her direct and tell her I have been rambling on again.

Hey Persie, no worries, interesting to read other stories.

Mildred, I am sorry about your poor Grandad, an awful thing to happen to him, bless him, and sad that he died because of the consequences. I have heard more from Joyce, will ask her if I can add the story.
I think she will be careful of her toe as she is diabetic. - it was her toe not Jan's that got run over!

They are as bad/mad as each other.

Tell Joyce I am not very with it, my daughter Annagretta (Joyce has her photo) posted on facebook that "white noise was playing at her house" and 3 people put that they liked that. Me I thought oh hope they aren't playing it too loud with the little wee baby of five weeks in the house. I thought it was some sort of heavy metal band.... it turns out it is for August (she has his photo too) and it is soft sounds that are like light rain and womb sounds. He is having trouble sleeping. When I was down at their place, this nana said I would wrap him up so his arms aren't out - he has them above his head when he sleeps. They said he didn't like being bundled up... ha ha ha nana is right - they now have to wrap him up, his arm waving technique keeps waking him up.

I do hope she recovers okay....

Just had a message to say Joyce has gout in the other foot and is unable to put it to the ground, added to which Jan is very unwell, so she is going to call the doctor.
It never rains but what it pours for our Joyce. If I hear any more news I will keep you posted.

Text earlier from Joyce to say Jan has pneumonia and she is fed up with everything going wrong! Can't say I blame her, her luck is worse than mine!

Will be talking to her later today so will keep you all posted.

Lizxx

Deanna, Joyce got a scooter before Christmas I think it was, but with the snow she hasn't been out on it much, and hasn't tried a few practise runs when the weather has been good. I told her to get L plates and try it up and down the road just doing turns and manoevres etc but she won't be able to with Jan laid up. As Joyce doesn't drive, I don't think she has a lot of road sense lol I bet the air is blue when she did go on it, with Jan cycling behind her, he was in front but was worried she would run into him and knock him off his bike, so he cycled behind shouting directions lol

Can you just picture it, bet the village have never seen anything like it lol

Hi Liz,

Just thought I would check up on Joyce and Jan and see whether they are keeping between the white lines and looking after each other. Hope their scooter abilities have improved. LOL
