Be patient and calm - for no one can catch fish in anger.
Herbert Hoover

William Penn

It does not take much strength to do things, but it requires great strength to decide on what to do.

Elbert Hubbard

" ......and the wisdom to know the difference" Janey ;-) my mum had that on a plate once, she got very annoyed with it after a while and gave it to the charity shop lol

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 4 Jun 2011 00:19

Nono, RR, that was the silly version:

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference."

For wimps, or for manipulating the vulnerable!

I like the updated versions of things. ;-)

"Speak loudly and carry a big schtick."

Susan10146857 Report 4 Jun 2011 00:20

Ah yes, S#, "laziness is the mother of invention". :-D

And of course:

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there
may be in owning a piece thereof. Avoid quiet and passive persons,
unless you are in need of sleep. Rotate your tires. Speak glowingly
of those greater than yourself, and heed well their advice, even though
they be turkeys. Know what to kiss, and when. Consider that two
wrongs never make a right, but that three do. Wherever possible,
put people on hold. Be comforted that in the face of all aridity and
disillusionment, and despite the changing fortunes of time, there is
always a big future in computer maintainance.

Remember the Pueblo. Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle, and
mutilate. Know yourself; if you need help, call the FBI. Exercise
caution in your daily affairs, especially with those persons closest
to you - that lemon on your left, for instance. Be assured that a
walk through the ocean of most souls would scarcely get your feet wet.
Fall not in love, therefore; it will stick to your face. Gracefully
surrender the things of youth - birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan - and
let not the sands of time get in your lunch. Hire people with hooks.
For a good time call 606-4311; ask for Candy. Take heart amid the
deepening gloom that your dog is finally getting enough cheese, and
reflect that whatever misfortune may be your lot, it could only be
worse in Milwaukee.

You are a fluke of the Universe. You have no right to be here, and
whether you can hear it or not, the Universe is laughing behind your
back.

Therefore, make peace with your God, whatever you conceive Him to be:
Hairy Thunderer or Cosmic Muffin. With all its hopes, dreams,
promises, and urban renewal, the world continues to deteriorate.

Give up.

I just had to fix a glaring mistake in that c&p job.

It is, of course, The Deteriorata!

Rambling Report 4 Jun 2011 00:25

Not my mum's version Janey which was "speak softly and carry a big stick" lol

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 4 Jun 2011 00:29

Oh yeesh!!!

The sappy yucky version of the AA "serenity prayer" is:

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference."

Small wonder your mother threw the plate out. She should've broken it over the head of whoever gifted her with it.

The one I prefer is:

“God grant me the authority to change the things I cannot accept.”

I have the button. ;-)

Of course, there being nobody there to do the granting, one just has to assume the authority for one's self!

"Speak loudly and carry a big schtick" is the Stephen Colbert version.

Of course, him being a USAmerican parody person, you probably wouldn't know him. Or like him. USAmerican parody generally ain't much good, but it's all they got, so they like it.

And on tonight's theme:

“Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today.
Teach a man to fish, and he will sit in the boat and drink beer all day.”
