Just so you are not too confused Ann............South Stoneham (S Stoneham) is where most Southampton BMDs in that area were registered back then.

I have sent you a message Ann.

Ann Report 14 Jun 2011 18:50

Think this must be his dad;
JAMES, A J Widow F 42 1869 Housekeeper Southampton Hants
(Annie Alice Clark died in 1911, so she wouldn't be there)

Grandad
CLARK, Alfred Nephew M 2 1909 Southampton Hants

Granddad's brother :
CLARKE, Charles F Nephew Single M 14 1897 Southampton Hants

Granddad's sister:
CLARK, Grace Niece F 7 1904 Southampton Hants

How do you trace where they lived all their lives etc? if 1911 was the last census how would I know where the dad went to?

Ann

Ann Report 14 Jun 2011 18:45

they are correct aren't they. Because I remember my granddad talking about Dunn. I'll just look to see who was Granddad's siblings THANK YOU you are all so clever, wish I could just to a bit of that! xx :-)

Rambling Report 14 Jun 2011 18:45

right so with that marriage, from freebmd

Marriages Jun 1895 (>99%)

Wright Annie Alice Southampton 2c 56
to James Clark you may be able to find them on the 1901 census on Ancestry, that should give you a place of birth for each of them . you could also buy their marriage cert for names of their fathers.

Ann Report 14 Jun 2011 18:42

Thankyou so much everyone x I spoke to my granddad a lot and he never said he lived in Stoneham. Perhaps could you find his mother - I have her details and know they are correct.

Annie Alice Wright
20 Jun 1878 - 33 New Road, Southampton
Married June 1895 in Southampton
Died 14 Jan 1911 in 1 Lower Bridge Road, Southampton

Then perhaps I could get my links from there and find out who she was married to - James Clark, apparently he was a professional bagpipe player and Annie Alice Clark was a music hall artist. I think her husband was born in dundee, but I'm not sure.

I have some information, and did start to do some of this years ago, but then my mum and granddad died and my mind just went blank and I can't remember anything - probably just a mental block as I missed them so much. So I am really trying to go back.

There you go Ann,,Alfred Grace and Charles were neice and nephews to A J James, you need to find where she fits in the Clark or Alfreds mothers family . ...and question/ wheres Alfreds parents in 1911??are Grace,&Charles siblings to Alfred??

Rambling

Rambling Report 14 Jun 2011 18:39

Ann Ancestry only have the summary books as yet, not the full transcriptions ( they are coming soon i think) .

This is the birth you have

Births Mar 1909 (>99%)

CLARK Alfred George Southampton 2c 39

so to be 100% sure you will need his birth cert which you can order online at

that's great, but i'd love to know how to do it myself? so I would look on the 1911 census which I have access to on ancestry.com - so I just put in his details?

Rambling

Rambling Report 14 Jun 2011 18:27

Ann you have your grandad born 1909 Southampton, so you could ask on 'find ancestors' board if someone will look for him with parents on the 1911 census. You will need his birth cert to be sure of parents but depending on name the 1911 may give you a good idea ( if it's not a common name).

EDIT it's possibly this one

HOUSEHOLD CLARK ALFRED M 1909 2 South Stoneham Hampshire

Ann

Ann Report 14 Jun 2011 18:27

Could someone help get me started - as in where would be the first place to look :-

Alfred George Clark
Born 1909
Southampton

and how I would then find his mother and then his father - which records do i search please ? :-)

Kay????

Kay???? Report 14 Jun 2011 18:23

Hi Ann,

YOu have already joined Genes and paid membership,,this only entitles you over a free one,the access to post on the message boards,,,,,,,,,,records are limited here and at this time Ancestry offer a wider range depending on which subs you take out to suit your needs,,,,,and of course pocket :-D :-D :-D

Findmypast offer a wide range of records, including the basics of many births deaths /marriages census.then extend to others,,,

Ann Report 14 Jun 2011 18:22

Ann

Ann Report 14 Jun 2011 18:21

Thank you so much I'm sat here in Australia (used to live in UK) and I don't where to start...

I have my granddad born 1909 in Southampton.

So what's my first step please?

I just need to know how to get the hang of searching and how you do it - do you do it in ancestory or GR? :-)

Rambling

Rambling Report 14 Jun 2011 18:19

What you will get here for your standard membership Ann is great expertise and advise on where and how to search etc.

And don't forget
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

what ever site you sign up to, this is the best starting point for info you can then look for on census etc

Rambling Report 14 Jun 2011 18:16

I would personally advise doing a free trial on Ancestry first, see if you like it, depending on what you're looking for, Ancestry has records that GR doesn't have.
