Our regular postie is on his hols so we have a temporary replacement.

This morning we had a delivery consisting of one large letter, a heap of marketing leaflets from local businesses and a card for OH.

All these would fit through the letter box without folding.

What did the postie do? He rolled one edge of the total post after bunching it all together and shoved it through the letterbox. I know cos I watched him.

OH now has a card which is ruined which makes me so angry.

If the lazy wotsit had just pushed it through as normal we wouldn't have partially destroyed items.

We have a change of postie every so often. We always know when a new one is doing the rounds...we all get the wrong mail.

OK it is confusing round here. I live at Flat 1, of a building which is address on the main road (which for demonstration purposes we'll call main road.) All the other 5 flats in this building are on the main road side of the building through a shared lobby. Mine has it's own front door in (side road) and is numbered 1.

Also in side road, there is a number 1, but it's hidden around the back, and there is a 1a side road, which looks like it should be in Main Road...

So when we get a new postie, we spend the rest of the day delivering each others mail!!! (and picking up red rubber bands grrr)

Oh and I had a parcel delivered, well the card was shoved through the door to say nobody was in. I was stood at my window watching the postie writing the card as he walked up the path, shoved it through the door and walked away without even knocking. Had a few words with him, but he then refused to deliver as it had been recorded as non-delievery and swore blind he HAD knocked on the door.
I had to arrange for another delivery and waited two more days. Needless to say a complaint went in.

We had a regular postman for about 15 years. He retired at Christmas and we get a succession of postmen now, some come early, some late, some good some not so good. One got all the mail wrong because he didn't stop and check the numbers so because he got the first lot wrong each house got the post for the house next door. And we have packets that would have gone through the letter box sent back to the depot and a red card delivered. And we know he has them with him because on occasion OH had chased around after him and retrieved them, only to find it would have fitted through the letter box. And we also have had items rolled/folded and we have a large letter box. :-S

I had a good wrong delivery last week - errors from goodness knows how many sorting offices through to the delivering post man.........who obviously didn't read the address.

The only thing remotely similar to our address was the house number and the initial of the road................200 miles away from where is was supposed to have gone!

re the postie refusing to hand over things. Ours said that even though he knew where I lived, he wasn't allowed to hand it over unless I was on the property, and he has seen I had access to the house - he used to turn up just as I was going to work.

Our regular postie leaves parcels with me for neighbours and vice versa (we all know each other).

One day we came home and the dog flap on the back door was open, a larger parcel had been delivered obviously no neighbours home so he took the initiative and shoved it through the dog flap :-D :-D

We find parcels hidden all over the place in the dark space high up in the wooden storm shelter is a favourite place - I never think to look there..lol

Getting back to the subject, there was no need to ruin the card :-(

All the rounds have been changed here and our 'old' postie now has a rural van delivery and we have an on-foot one. The dog loved the old one - we introduced them to each other when he was a puppy - but the new one is a nightmare. He KNOWS we have a dog, but leaves the gate open, dog wanders out (we live on a main road). We have now re-jigged the post box and have built a fence and inner gate, so he doesn't have to enter the garden.

Well they don't vet or train the new staff any more do they.
When my husband applied to be come a Postie in the 60's he had to first of all serve 18 mths as a PO cleaner,then he was put through an aptitude test!(shapes into holes,know his colours & similar )
He had to sign the Official Secrets act & swear an alegience to the Queen & accept the Queens shilling before he got his uniform.
NOT wearing the official cap was a sackable offence in those days,changed days. He was a Postie for 25yrs.
There can't / won't be many of the old school left in the PO today,unfortunately.

WE HAD A SMASHING POSTMAN FOR YEARS ,WE NOW HAVE A NEW ONE SINCE GEORGE RETIRED BUT HE'S JUST AS GOOD GEORGE TOLD HIM THAT I CANT GET TO MY FRONT DOOR WHEN ALONE SO HE COMES TO MY BACK DOOR,HE KNOCKS I CAN SEE ITS HIM SO CALLES OPEN THE TOP ( WE HAVE A BARN DOOR) HE OPENS AN LEANS OVER TO PUT THE POST ON MY WORK TOP...HE'S A STAR

i remember the days when we had our post waiting before we got up

now were luky to have it before bed time lol,

i like our posie he knows if im not in im at mams so if i have somthing to sgn for, he comes here for me lol x

Joan, back in those days, the postal service was about just that....service. Nowadays, as with so many businesses,it's all about money and profit, which is often at the expense of the workers and worst of all the expense of the customer.

My Grandad was a postie in the east end of London, for about 30 years, he was treated well, paid reasonably well, and wore his uniform and cap with pride. He'd have plenty to say about how it is these days.

Perhaps if the posties weren't delivering all the junk mail (that gets binned immediately) they would be able to offer the service we expect and pay for.

It's different here, at the sorting office if a 'signed for' was being sorted and the postie knew we'd be in work (that applied to people in our village to my knowledge), the envelope would be given to the postie who delivered to where we worked. Now that is service :-D

Well our postmen here in Westminster are obviously busy putting a LARGE printed notice on our postbox from Royal Mail, saying that if we don't stop our dogs peeing near the postbox they will take away our facilities!!! How feckin dare they! :-0 :-0

The thing is Pigletspal,that my dog is far too superior to pee against a common old postbox,and I put that on their notice this morning, so I did. Signed...Anon of course :-D

I hope your postie stops sulking for the next couple of days...you have a delivery coming. :-D

Our post is delivered same time every day about 9.0 am and as I am last in the block I get to keep the elastic bands. This is a small, market town.
However, in the City, at my daughter's work , they have been asked to sort out their outgoing mail even more than they do now and the company already pays a fee to ensure the mail is delivered by 8 am

Not sure why the latter is happening but most likely to do with the need for profit rather than service but that's the age we live in now.

Yes PP, I agree, when the Private companies take over,we are definately going to have problems.
They only want the cream of the postal service, businesses, they certainly won't / don't want the rural or the outskirts of town deliveries,those of us in those areas shall most likely in time,end up having to go & collect our own mail,& the cost of sending anything via the private companies is going to be very expensive.
