Who will be first on that one? As a very oldie i remember my grannie and some aunties having aspidestras growing in the living room in big Greek urns.(Think the plants liked gas light).

Does anyone have memories of aspidestras or indeed, does anyone still have one?

Ah...the aspidistra in a chenille draped vestibule......the ancient lady clad in an Edwardian brown gown....

I had one about 20 years ago, loved it, but then I am old fashioned.Don't think they are readily available at the moment otherwise I would get one as they don't need a great deel of care and from my point of view that is a good thng, I either kill indoor plants with too much kindness or total unintended neglect, I'm hopeless.

Harry i still have an aspidistra, (two in fact) it has been split several times but the main part is still in the terracotta pot it was in when my grandmother was photographed with it outside her parents house around 1900.

I had one for about 40 years .It was given to me by a man I worked with, called Fred Grundy as I recall (wonder whatever happened to him? lol) and saw me through some interesting years. Eventually it yellowed and died...tsk tsk.... BCXX

Think he died on a Monday BC.

Thanks for the great replies. Always thought they were popular cos they didn't mind fumes such as from ciggies and open fires, as well as draughty windows.

My granny had the biggest Aspidistra in the world !!...LOL it was always on her round Oak table in a dark green round pot and when she died my mother being fond of going contemporary with all modern furnisher , gave all the contents of my granny's flat to the Rag & Bone man !!! :-S

How I wish I could have had that table now..I was only 17yrs too young to store or even afford to.

Would not want the Aspidistra though :-S Glad someone could spell that ..LOL

ahh childhood memories :-) my Granma had an Aspidistra on a what -not by the hat stand in the passage lol always remember looking at it and thinking it had come from Tarzan's jungle home ....far far away :-D

My inlaws had a what-not (allegedly) I had no idea what it was and I'm still not sure :-0 If I'd read your post all those years ago I'd have looked for an aspidistra in the passage and all might have been revealed.
I don't think they had and aspidistra but they were matyrs to other problems :-0

oh there were very strange things in Granma's house Island....like the fox-stole hung over the red velvet sofa *shudders*..I can still recall those beady eyes :-0

....and the many staring cats sitting on the big window ledge of the landing window...urgh!

My great aunt had a large oak chest in the front bedroom. I was very small and it was spooky but I would have to follow my brothers as they explored. I just knew there was a body in this chest and had to be passed each time there was an expedition. I always gave it as wide a berth as I could.

Many years later I related this to my mother who told me it was the same chest which had by then been residing in their hall for several years and the one that I had often sat on to make phones calls :-0 My bottom clenched at the very thought.

Last year, now that I am taller and the chest seems so much smaller, it moved into my home and looks after my bits of fabric and knitting yarns :-D


edit. I don't recollect whether said great aunt had an aspidisra but she did have a mangle on the yard and knew the words to The Biggest Aspidistra in the World. She would as "Gracie Fields" lived in her street but that's another story :-D

Can i just add that my gran's plant was in a great dark green urn - which added to the gloom.

Being really silly, but they all said they were broke - so a Greek can't urn much.


Mind you we didn't ask the chaps on the millionaire yachts for their opinion.

We have 3 which o h looks after he's actualy named 2 Alice and Blanche (don't ask) he keeps them in the shed in winter .Hr bought a greenhouse heater to keep them at right temperature say's its to hot in house . Think he thinks more of them than me! haha
