Hi Chris and all,
Yes the 'bastard' surname is genuine and I sometimes get funny looks when asked a certain persons maiden name when filling in application forms....we did originate from France and came across to England in 1066...so far have found distant relatives all over the globe but especially in Devon.....long may we reign .
Regards
Joyce

All the Bastards in my family are without the capital letter but we do have Hoar and Samways which are not particularly remarkable around here.

We would look twice at a name like Utterthwaite or Higginbottom though. They would be interlopers!

And there are those names which appear to originate in the north, two come to mind, Ramsbottom, Higginbottom.

Yes it wouldn't be nice now would it? But back in the 40s nobody thought anything of it. I would imagine nowadays the emphasis would be on the second syllable. I did used to know somebody called J...... Cock.

Lol Island, he looked like a crow. I went to a C of E school and he used to take us for 'Scripture' (as it was then called), he'd be all in black and he had a long hooked nose.

I used to go to school with somebody with the surname Bastard. In the 40s we didn't think anything of it and yes, it was in Fareham.

And if I remember right the vicars name was Hoar.

I hadn't noticed 'retrieve for more results before Chris. I just put my surname in.....4,500...I didn't know we were that common. Duplicates! I say Duplicates! :-D

Going back to 'Bastard', as a surname I believe the first 'a' is silent
