I have known many clowns over the years from my magician side. The best advice i heard was to come on partly dressed as a clown (a virtually ordinary man) and make up in front of the children. It is supposed to be quite effective.

Certainly a gentle appearance and start is essential for the tinies.

My son has never liked masks, I took him to the circus when he was 5 yrs old saved up for ages for the tickets at first he loved it stood up waving his little flag clapping and joining in till the clowns came on I thought he was going to love their naughty antics he flung himself across my knee and then wrapped his little arms round my neck his legs round my waist and clung to me for the rest of the show. :-(

It's really difficult putting the make-up without opposable thumbs.

I remember being scared witless by the childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

I just googled and realised that I was a 16 year old wimp!!!

That was how old I was when the childcatcher on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang scared me! LOL

Edit *uses calculator* I was only 14...........still a wimp, but we were innocent at 14 way back then :-D :-D

Years ago we took two very young nieces to Newcastle town moor to see the Bertram Mills circus.
The girls were really enjoying the show until the clowns came on in their car. When it broke down and they larked about trying to fix it there was a huge bang (from exhaust) and one of the clowns 'lost his head' and ran around the ring :-0 ....both girls screamed out loud and cried so much we had to take them out.
It left a lasting impression and don't think they ever liked clowns again. :-(

I was taken to the circus when I was really little (about 4 I think) and didn't like it at all! I felt sorry for the animals shut up in cages, especially the lions, with that awful man cracking his whip at them............ then the clowns came on, makaing weird noises, I thought they were silly. I said so, and remember being lectured by my father, who said I was ungrateful!!

I have a few clown ornaments, but they don't make any noise :-D

Can't stand clowns, masks or those idiots that stand in the street like a statue & suddenly move :-(

Cousin and I were playing clowns when I must have been three. We painted our faces from the paint box in the front room where the grown ups were.

When we were sent to wash it all off in the bathroom, without the grown ups, I was afraid of her.

It may have had something to do with my aunt saying it would wash off with toilet soap, an expression I had never heard before, and my not wanting anything that was used to clean the toilet sullying my wondrous countenance.
