Potty

Potty Report 17 Jul 2013 12:16

Barbra, don't know which part of D&G you are in, but if you are ever travelling west along the A75, call in to the Galloway Smokehouse at Carsluith and try one of their venison pies - absolutely delicious.

The thing I miss most up here is oven bottom muffins - now they made a sandwich to keep you going all day. (For the non-Lancastrians, they are a large, flat bread roll - not the ones with holes in that you eat toasted dripping in butter).

Edit: you could then call in at Cream of Galloway for some of their ice cream.

Sorry, Robert - hope this doesn't make you fatter!

In the Northeast (of England) Greggs call oven bottoms "stotties" and in Scotland Greggs call them "Scotties"

Barbra, if I don't stop now, I will miss my friend Gym.

Potty, I really do fancy one of your Venison Pies.

I still prefer a good Scotch Pie - every now and then I have been known to go a bit daft and order a dozen from Murdoch Brothers the butchers in Forres plus some Ayrshire bacon and a couple of haggis and they deliver it all in an insulated box ;-)

I had a hankering for some square sausage (recipe somewhere on this thread, on an earlier page).

Went shopping, and couldn't find mace in the supermarket!!

Surely it's not that difficult to find?! Or has it turned into one of those "yuppie" things we can only get in speciality shops?

:-(

I went to GoogleLand and found this ~

Substitute the mace called for in your recipe with an equal amount of nutmeg. Since mace is the membrane that surrounds nutmeg, the flavor will be similar.

You can also use allspice, cinnamon, ginger or pumpkin pie spice. Replace measure for measure.

My grandfather would NOT be amused :-|

Nolls from Harrogate I have tried several scotch pies since I moved down here and settled on Murdoch's as being nearest to what I used to buy in Scotland, I will be ordering some more at the end of this month.

All this talk about food is making me yearn for my favourite fish supper. I used to travel about 30 miles once a week to a Fish and Chip shop I discovered on the outskirts of Dundee, their specialty was a whole haddock, headed, gutted, and tailed, bone left in, then deep fried in their own special batter - the most delicious and juicy fish supper I have ever tasted :-)

I thought mace was an old fashioned spice not a new thing but I definitely saw it somewhere quite recently!

And Scozz ...What's with the latest Avi?
It's really creepy!

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 18 Jul 2013 13:24

lol Glasgow Lass

I've changed my avatar a couple of times lately.....

Do you mean the one of me peeking through a hole in the wall, or Popeye's Mother?

:-D

I've used mace many times, I think I threw out my last jar because it was so old it had gone solid!

I might try a mixture of ginger & nutmeg.

OH might eat the square sausage, not sure if he'll like what I'm going to make tomorrow............. spinach, sweet potato & feta pie!

GlasgowLass

GlasgowLass Report 18 Jul 2013 13:27

THAT thing wi the fag? Is that.....Popeye's mother???

If you want to terrify the weans.... just show them that Avi!

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 18 Jul 2013 13:31

Now that I think of it......... did Popeye have decent teeth?

Must google for that lol

I have a wonderful pic here........made contact many years ago with a lovely lady. She said she had a great pic of her grandparents, the whole family loved the pic, and called it "The Broons". She sent me a copy & I nearly lost control of bodily functions laughing at it. I went into complete hysterics. There's Maw Broon, wearing her coat & funny wee hat, and there's Paw Broon, with his big moustache & bunnet..... a classic!

:-D

You should be able to buy mace in most major supermarkets, apart from being used in making lorne sausage, it is used in the fillings for Scotch Pies and gives a nice tang to omelletes and recipes using a - white, cheese, or parley sauce ;-)

I have just remembered the first time that I went into a baker's shop in Fife.
I asked for a loaf... and was given TWO.
I said that I wanted just one please, and was given 'that look'.
Oh she said, you must be from the West so you'll be wanting..... a Half Loaf then!

My sis explained it to me.
