sorry I laughed Catherine, why have you bought a memory stick without knowledge on how it works?

I haven't used my tree on here much for ages.. in fact I complained when they gave the matching trees names after the surname of the person and if you are matched up six people with the surname Genes.. then you don't know which one to choose and they changed that one.

However, I just added a spouse to one of the blokes and that added and then I went over to the details and put in the marriage date and saved. Closed the page and went back and it is all there.. I wonder why mine works and others do not.. obviously it can work. I think along the principle if this kiwi can anyone can. I will have another look tomorrow just to make sure. :-S

I appreciate the scepticism of some members re. the software rewrite, especially from their experiences of previous updates. However, with fingers crossed, it seems that a total rewrite is the only way to go if the numerous reported problems, some of which (like disappearing data) make people's trees pretty useless, are to be cured.

My one big fear is whether existing data will migrate successfully to the new tree, whenever it's ready!

lol.... I've already responded to Robert on the Scottish thread about that.........I don't need to be addressed as ma'am........ and I rarely use the title of Lady rofl :-D

On the subject of memory sticks......... I bought one last week; never used one before and have no idea what to do with it! No instructions came with it. :-( I'm not stupid, just haven't used one before now........

if anyone laughs at that.......... how did YOU find out?

Thanks LadyScozz <3 in view of those royal connections in your earlier post on the "Why not a Scottish" thread, perhaps I should call you Ma'am :-D

What I have been doing, is downloading the images, and saving them to my external hard drive, at some point I will also put them all on a memory stick and send them to the son of one of my nieces who is doing research into the family.

I am still waiting on the response Shelley the Community Manager was going to get regarding the issues I raised on this and other threads, methinks by the time that response is forthcoming I will probably have popped my clogs :-D

OFITG

I just read your post about going back and forward from your info on SP & your tree.

Open your documents on SP and right click...... a box will appear, one option is email......... email them to yourself, and they should be easier to find. Title the emails Birth/Marriage/Death/Census & then surnames first, so they are easy to locate.

Keep them somewhere safe! I had loads stuck in outlook express which vanished when I compacted email. One of these days I will get them all on a cloud.

:-D

I had this problem (marriage details vanishing) years ago.... at least eight years.

I contacted the support team... can't remember the exact response, but it was the (now) expected...... what browser are you using, etc etc etc.

I haven't noticed any details missing lately, but I don't use the tree much now.

There you go........ the problem has been around for years, and still hasn't been fixed!

GR say there are many problems, most can't be fixed? Tell us something we don't know!

I wonder what new/new/old/new/whatever tree they've got in mind for the next one...... which will eventually be replaced.

Am I a cynic? NO! Realistic.

Hugh - this comment in the reply you received sends shivers down my spine:-

"our technical team are currently working on developing a new family tree program to be used on the site"

I can recall, and I am sure may others can, the nightmare that lasted from mid December 2012 to mid March 2013 when they changed the tree and to this day we still have problems with that tree, such as marriage data failing to save :-(

This is the latest reply I have received from GR Support Team :-

Dear Hugh

Thank you for your email.

Firstly with regard to your query regarding disappearing data, our technical team are currently working on developing a new family tree program to be used on the site. As such, any current issues will not be be fixed immediately as their resources are being focused on the new tree.

In terms of the new marriage on the tree, would you be able to advise me on the details of the individuals you are trying to enter the marriage for (names and year of birth). I can then take a look at your tree and offer you some more accurate advice.

Can you also let me know the email address which your account is under so that I can locate the tree.

I look forward to hearing from you,

With kind regards,

Laurie Spence

Hugh,

I have lost count of the number of times I have received that message since I first reported this issue back at the beginning of 2013.

Today I have spent over two hours flipping back and forwards between my tree and Scotlands People, re-entering details that have disappeared from a branch of my tree - thank goodness for Time Line on SP.

This is a ridiculous situation and it has been an on going problem for nearly 14 months now, how long does it take to find a solution, they will be telling us next that pigs do fly.

Hugh

The support team have replied to my report as follows:-

Dear Hugh,

Thank you for taking the time to report this problem.

Our technical team are aware of the specific problem that you reported and we will be implementing a solution as soon as is possible.

Your patience while we work to resolve this is much appreciated.

Poor Shelley, I wouldn't want her job, she must feel she is fighting a losing battle on our behalf. :-)

I have to say, since the latest changes to the tree I rarely visit mine. thankfully I am more or less, barring brick walls, where I want to be with my tree. thank goodness I got there before they 'updated' everything.

KenSE, my subscription of £19.95 enables my tree to go online where matches are found with other trees, and allows me to communicate with other paid members to request to view their trees and then view these on line. This is largely the purpose of the site as indicated by 'Reunited'. The ability to share my tree is rendered pretty useless when half the data is missing.

If I only want to build my tree there are many software packages for this, and indeed I use such a package which has much more functionality, can be totally saved and backed up, and doesn't lose any data. My use of GR is purely for the sharing aspect.

The tree is free. Why would you expect a refund?

Standard and Platinum members pay for other services.

Hugh Report 6 May 2014 16:45

I've just done a check on my Marriage Data. Whilst the Person Married To is shown in the Person Details Record and the Marriage Link is shown on the tree graphic,
ALL records of Date of Marriage and Place of Marriage have disappeared!

I'm about to contact the Support Tean again to tell them that if this cannot be sorted, then the product is not legally 'fit for purpose'.

Fingers and toes crossed.

Island, your lasts 2 posts made me think - how many of the 13 million 'members' are actually current subscribers as opposed to people who created a tree some time ago and do not have a currently active subscription? As you say, there are also free accounts.

It's interesting to note that I renewed a lapsed Standard Subscription 12 days ago for £19.95 only to discover a couple of days later they were doing it for £15.96. Does this tell us something?

Island Report 6 May 2014 15:13

Hugh, I wish you luck with getting a satisfactory response.

13 million subscribers or 13 million accounts? I have three. This one and two free ones.
Not for much longer.
