Just watched the youtube and that was only a very thin duvet.
I wouldn't be able to do that with a 13.5 tog duvet .

I have to think about the weight as well Joan .... our bed is a king size so our duvet is 240cm x 220cm (nearly 8feet by 7feet odd) and as I am only 4ft 11.5ins I've always had to find the easiest ways to accommodate.

I was just reading on fb about the good old days when we would have heavy coats piled on the bed to stay warm lol

One thing that helps us stay warm in bed is the variety of mattreses with different toppings, and a quilted or fleecy mattress cover. I could never understand people who just put a sheet over the basic mattress, apart from keeping the mattress clean it added a layer of warmth if you had a blanket beneath you under the sheet.

In the same vein, I feel angry with parents who plonk a baby or toddler in a buggy with no blanket under or over them for comfort, warmth and keeping the buggy clean. Poor little mites.

I made a mini duvet to put in the bottom of the pushchair when my eldest was little, and a larger one to put over her, then the pushchair cover. Winters in Essex were cold!
She wore a pair of quilted dungarees and matching quilted jacket.
The only problem was - she wouldn't wear gloves :-|

The 'village worthy' stopped me once - I had been an ag lab, so (according to her) was 'wanting'.
She pointed out L's hands, and said she wasn't dressed appropriately. Apparently, her jacket was too short - her clothes were cheap!

I took L out of her 'Silver Cross' pushchair, showed the hag her duvets, then showed her the label on L's jacket.
'Harrods' (mum worked there). 'Cheap eh'? I asked. 'Where would she LIKE me to get her clothes from? Could she recommend a more expensive shop?' :-D :-D :-D :-D

The same stupid woman, on seeing me push a pram with my younger daughter in asked whose the baby was.
'Mine' I replied.
'I didn't know you were pregnant', she said.
'I wasn't aware you had to know', was my retort. :-D :-D :-D

Lol Maggie! I had a small sheepskin offcut for my son to lie/sit on in his buggy, plus a cosytoes in colder weather with a knitted blanket inside. I also knitted him little legwarmers to cover the gap between socks and trousers, made from oddments of wool so gaily striped! I knitted mittens and put them on elastic threaded through his coat sleeves, they were more likely to stay on and at least didn't get lost. I also knitted a couple of balaclava helmets to wear under his coat hood. For a youngster sitting in a buggy or pushchair, they need warm clothing and blankets as they aren't moving about much to get/keep warm. Also with modern buggies the kids are left facing into the wind and rain.

Coming back to blankets, I can see how they can be an attractive alternative. It’s easier to peal back ‘layers’ than an all or nothing duvet.
They didn’t work too well for us. OH used to kick to loosen the bottom tuck in as he felt confined.

The current advice for young children or babies in car seats is that they shouldn’t wear padded or thick garments. That’s so that there’s no movement in the straps. It must be a hassle if they’re being transported in a car but then have to be re-layered if they’ll be spending time in a pushchair.
Our toddlers used to have a ‘cosy toes’ quilted leggings which came up to their chests at the front, with a long back which hooked on to the top of the pushchair. When they were babies, we used to tuck a covered hot water bottle in the pram. They’d be put into a ‘grow bag’, an all in one suit made out of a piece of woollen blanket. It probably used to be mine!

Another thing I made for my son when he was smaller was a knitted snuggle bag. It was a back and front sleeveless top that buttoned on the shoulders, over his clothes but under his jacket with a 'skirt' that came past his toes, wide enough for him to move his legs about but it kept him covered and warm. I think I put velcro along the bottom so I could changing his nappy without stripping him off

Some good ideas here thank you, I shall try the methods shown the next time I change the duvet cover and let you know how I get on. :-)
