With my memory it's a good thing I am not a liar isn't it?

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 28 Jan 2018 23:58

Okay! :-D
Interesting theory that it was some sort of haemorrhaging bug/virus.

Sharron

Sharron Report 28 Jan 2018 23:50

I have watched them but like to keep them for future reference (memory's going).

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 28 Jan 2018 23:35

So I daren't mention what was in the programme? :-\

Sharron

Sharron Report 27 Jan 2018 22:51

I have recorded them because I need to see everything several times to make any sense of it.

It seems likely that anything that knocked out a few would have been called plague I would think. They didn't know so very much about diseases but it evidently wasn't pox of any kind so it must be something else.

I like that they called diabetes the pissing evil so our surgery has a pissing evil nurse and she always seemed pretty pleasant to me.

It's on 155 on my freeview - after a programme on Medieval ships.
..and it's on PBS America! I never knew it existed.
Unfortunately, I have to get up early tomorrow :-(

Didn't the word 'plaque' historically describe any and all catastrophic events which involved hundreds/thousands of unexplained deaths?

MotownGal

MotownGal Report 27 Jan 2018 20:49

The programme is being repeated tonight, 23.05 Channel 94 on Freeview.

Night owls can stay up tonight..................no school tomorrow!!

It is by no means set in stone that fleas were involved in the spread at all.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 27 Jan 2018 16:44

Yes - then spread the disease by biting someone else.
Some people would probably be 'immune', or at least the bite would have a minimal effect - like some people erupt when bitten by a mosquito, whereas others don't notice it, and it has little effect.

Sharron

Sharron Report 27 Jan 2018 16:42

Some strains could even have been pneumonic.

David

David Report 27 Jan 2018 16:25

If it was human fleas they would have already bitten their host?

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 27 Jan 2018 16:22

As I said earlier - I read it could have been human fleas that spread it.

Sharron

Sharron Report 27 Jan 2018 15:50

That is the current belief.

The Great fire of London the following year destroyed (burned) most of the house that were of timber construction and stopped the plague spreading.

Sharron

Sharron Report 27 Jan 2018 14:35

It is.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 27 Jan 2018 14:27

Is that during Plague time?

Sharron

Sharron Report 27 Jan 2018 13:58

So, how about there not being a lot of rats about at that time then?

There's one to conjure with!

PBS is also a channel on Freeview. At least on a Smart TV. I watched that programme on the Black Death.

There have also been documentaries on the Mary Rose in the last couple of days too.

I always have a scan around to see what it on this station, as I cannot get excited about all the reality shows, nor the singing, nor the skating.
