Sylvia, amazing that I had not come across that saying as you know I was born and spent my early few years in Liverpool so not a million miles away from you. I first heard it in north-east England.

On the latch is one I had heard of but not used within our family circle. My OH, though, does say it and one of his grandparents came from Lancashire.

I have a good friend who is Tyneside-born and bred. She is my old mucker who still calls me hinney which, I think, is a word exclusive to Tyneside. (Anyone can jump in to correct me but I have never heard it used by anyone from any other region.)

I grew up in Lancashire hearing and saying mash the tea, and make the door, as in "I'll make the door before we go to bed"

ie, bolt and lock or chain the door for the night, otherwise it was "on the latch" when anyone was in the house (and sometimes all day regardless!).

The first time I heard 'letting the tea mash' I was in my teens. It was an expression never used where I was born and spent my early few years.

I like the fact that each area has unique sayings or when I come across a saying hundreds of miles away from where I first heard it.

My Dad often addressed us as 'Sweet' and I never heard it where we lived. A couple of years ago, I found out where it had come from when I was in a Southend supermarket and the lady at check-out called me 'Sweet'. My grandfather lived there with his family until he was beyond 21 when he moved. He had obviously passed the word on to Dad who, in turn, has got me saying it now.

Which reminds me, I have "no room to talk" when my conversation is peppered with "Thingummy, whatsit, doodah or doobrey"...as in " where's the doobrey gone?". :-S
