I'd like to thank all the lovely people who suggested sites, but I can't find them anywhere. I'm not a member of Ancestry so can't check there. Of course they may not have died but it seems unlikely that they'd both still be alive-Ron born 1924 and Kath a year older than Ron.
Can't find them on the electoral register but it's doubtful they'd still live in the address I knew as it was an upstairs flat with no lift available and I do know Kath suffered several strokes.
Guess I'll just have to keep wondering, but I am grateful for the trouble you took to respond. Many thanks.

Kay, I'll have a look on FMP for you if you like. Have you worked out if they had family?

Kay

Kay Report 12 Feb 2021 02:04

Thank you very much Island.
They didn't have children. Well, they did have a daughter . Pamela, who was born in 1952 but died soon after birth.
Their names are Ronald and Kathleen Hilder, both born in Hastings and lived their entire lives there, moving into 277 London Road , St. Leonards-on-Sea soon after they married, living there all their married lives. The address comes under Hastings.
It's very good of you to help and is much appreciated.

This is the GRO reference for Kathleen's death:-

HILDER, KATHLEEN MARY 1922
GRO Reference: DOR Q2/2019 in EAST SUSSEX (462-1B) Entry Number 519057051

Perhaps Ronald is still at the same address.

Shirley, Island, Kathleen, Gwyneth, Rollo.

Thank you so much for your replies and private messages. You're all brilliant!!

At least I know Kath has passed away and there's a possibility Ron's still alive. When I next go to Hastings, when all these Covid numbers allow me to, I'll call into their old address and see what I can find out from whoever answers the door.

Could anyone explain what the term "probate date" means please?

Thanks again to you all for your invaluable help. I really do appreciate it. XX

Probate date is the date when whoever is sorting out a person's estate and finances goes to court to have their will proved so that they can start to administer the will (carry out the person's wishes regarding what they have left).

Thank you for that explanation Kathleen.

Probate date is usually fairly soon after death, but can sometimes be several years later.

I have known of a case where it was about 13 years later !
