Amokavid Report 5 Jan 2026 13:49

Hi Florence.
Yes normally she could but she's in the same boat as me re the snow, she couldn't get from her house to mine by car yesterday until her hubby got the use of the digger/plough, she had to walk to mine yesterday so as to clear the snow from the back door to allow access to me.

Today because of more snow through the night the house road is not accessible again, daughter phoned to say she had walked to the end of my road & it's filled in again, & her car is stuck at her house.

The town where the chemist is is too far away to walk to ( around 6 miles each way) too far to walk especially in these conditions, so until her car is freed she can't collect the meds or go anywhere..

I am really cross about the meds as I ordered them in good time before christmas so that they would be delivered before new year, they didn't arrive & when I phoned the chemist I was told they didn't have a prescription for them !! they provided me with an emergency supply but just afew days not the usual full amount !, they will run out on weds !

It has snowed on & off all day today & is now really deep all around the house, it is going to take a lot of shifting either by shovel or naturally !!
I don't think I will see the Snowdrops this year ?

Joan..

LindainHerriotCountry Report 5 Jan 2026 14:27

Oh dear Joan, your meds situation doesn’t sound good. I hope that someone can collect them for you.
I saw the snow up your way on the lunchtime news. The snow here is more on the coast and hasn’t come this far in land. It is just very cold, even OH is complaining about how cold it feels in the house. The radiators are all on and according to the thermometer, the air is warm, so I don’t know why I still feel cold. I also have an electric fire here in the lounge, so I can put that on as well if need be. Luckily all the schools round here don’t go back until tomorrow, so I don’t have to go out to do the normal reading this afternoon. We did go to the supermarket this morning, OH came with me as he was bored, The estate roads were like glass, but once we got onto the bus route, that had been gritted, so driving was fine.

ArgyllGran Report 5 Jan 2026 15:02

". . . according to the thermometer, the air is warm, so I don’t know why I still feel cold"

That's exactly my situation too, Linda!

Went to town for shopping , and am just back. Driveway and track still inches thick with snow; side road leading to main road hasn't been gritted, so there's still snow on it, churned into slush in places by cars, but no tarmac showing; then the main road is completely clear.

Supermarket carpark not cleared or gritted. The "parking" bits are still mainly white, and the "road" parts are black slush. Not nice for walking on.

The only trouble was when only 30 yards or so from home on the way back!
By mistake I veered too far to the left on the track, and the left-hand front wheel went onto the verge - and then I was stuck! The wheels were spinning, and I couldn't go either forwards or back.
Fortunately very kind neighbours dug and pushed me out.
So close to home - I couldn't believe it!

Take care, everybody!

Perhaps your son-in-law will be able to have the use of the plough again before Wednesday, Joan. Fingers crossed.

Amokavid Report 5 Jan 2026 15:14

Hi Linda, there's only my daughter that an get the meds for me, no immediate neighbours (I don't know them at all) & most of our friends have gone now & the few that are left are the same age as me & no longer drive ! fi
Fingers crossed daughter can get out to do my grocery shop on Thursday! if so she will go to the chemist & get my pills, it all depends on the weather now.
I will need some groceries by Thursday so I really hope she can get to town! I have tablets for tomorrow & wednesday.

It's been a while since we had as much snow as we have at the moment, though we usually get plenty of it once the house road has been cleared it doesn't usually fill up again too much like it has done this time !

I am praying the power stays on, the build up of snow / ice on the line can weigh heavy !!

Joan.

Florence61 Report 5 Jan 2026 16:30

Joan, phone your GPs surgery and find out why it wasnt put through as that is not acceptable and ask what they can do about it?

Amokavid

Amokavid Report 5 Jan 2026 17:15

Hi Florence.
I can't see them being smpathetic, they are not always pleasant at the best of times.

It is annoying though as I had as usual worked out when I would need the pills & took the holidays into account, I couldn't order them any sooner than the 22nd dec as if you order too soon they won't send what you need !

Ordering from the 22nd gave time to order via
T the chemist & for them to order up the prescription & the pills would have been delivered inplenty of time.
The chemist person even told me that they would deliver on the Monday or Tuesday the 29th/30th dec.

If they had been delivered when they said I would have got all I needed before the snow arrived !

If my daughter gets to the chemist she will be looking into what went "wrong" & why it happened as it's not actually the first time ! t
The last time wasn't too much of a problem as the weather wasn't serious, though it did mean my daughter had to make a special trip to pick them up which was annoying when the chemist provide a delivery option !

Joan.

Morning all, I hope all is well for you all.

More snow through the night for us, it's not good, looking out of the bedroom window I can't see anything but snow, everything is well hidden under it, there are some long icicles hanging from the guttering, one is about 15inches in length !

LindainHerriotCountry Report 6 Jan 2026 11:11

Wow, that is picturesque Joan, as long as you are inside. We still don’t have any snow here, it is just bitterly cold, still minus one at 11 am.
OH has gone out this morning to his “ Old man’s talking club” They have a lecture on a different topic every week complete with coffee and biscuits. Once a month they all go out for a pub lunch afterwards, but that isn’t today. He has got the bus down instead of taking the car as the parking is difficult. Normally he would have walked, but he is suffering from tendonitis in his Achilles tendon, so he can’t walk far without it hurting. That is a nuisance to him as he really enjoys walking and had been going out three times a week for a long route march through the country side. It also means that he has nothing to do as it is too cold for gardening or working in the garage. He is the type of man who is only happy when he has jobs to do.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 6 Jan 2026 13:44

Still very cold here, but just above freezing today. The snow is beginning to melt gradually, and it's raining.

However, it will be like an ice-rink tomorrow, as it's forecast to be minus 3 for much of the day.
The snow was dry and powdery, but slush will become lumpy ice.

Moan, moan!

My daughter & grandaughter came over about an hour ago, Gr daughter shovelled the snow off the drive & made a path to the house for if the manny comes with my meds !!

My daughter phoned the chemist to find that there is still no prescription with them !
They are not allowed to give out a 2nd emergency supply so they are having to contact the H centre to discuss the problem, hopefully daughter will be able to collect a full supply on Thursday when she goes for my shopping.

My son in law opened up the house road for a 2nd time this week at 1-00 am this morning !! He had been out shifting snow in various places all last night. & did my road when on his way home. Daughter was able to get up & down the road by car today.

ArgyllGran Report 6 Jan 2026 15:01

That's excellent news, Joan!
Hopefully you will have your meds on Thursday. Surely the health centre can't leave you without!

Our GP surgery has had a problem with their online ordering system for several weeks, since before Christmas - and in fact, I've just tested it, and it still seems to be off.
We've had to phone our repeat prescription orders in, instead of placing them online.

Amokavid

Amokavid Report 6 Jan 2026 15:12

Hello A gran. Fingers crossed I will get them at some point this week.
I Phone the chemist for my repeat prescoptions, always have, they do have an online option but not sure which option would be best !

Daughter is here there & everywhere at the moment, sh'e a good lass but could do without the extra work re the snow, I will be glad to see the back of it, I haven't seen so much for a long time.

Thank goodness for her hubby, he got a new job earlier this year, farmng a usual but a much better boss, without his new boss we would be still blocked in as the previous farmer wouldn't help anyone, not even an elderly woman on her own !!

Just when i thought things couldn't get any worse I now have a problm with the heating.
About 2 hours ago i noticed the L room getting chilly but i could hear the boiler running & the light on the thermostat was on, but the radiator was barely warm.

I tried several things to but nothing worked, I could switch the thermostat down & it went off but soon came back on again.
It doesn't seem to want to turn off unless I do it !

I have told my daughter but shes not at home just now, I seem to be constantly having to ask her for help.

I am soo fed up I have had yet another cry, I am just so upset, feel like going to my bed & not leaving it.
Sorry to be such a misery.

Joan.

It is a worry for you Joan. You need to be warm this time of year. If your daughter can’t help have you got a phone number of a heating engineer. Worth paying if you can get warm. I am sure your daughter knows that you only ask for help when you really need it, she won’t mind and would not want you to be cold. Wrap a blanket over youself and have a hot drink. Hope it can be fixed soon for you. Let us know when you have had help. I really do know how you feel, it is not easy living alone. <3

Florence61

Florence61 Report 6 Jan 2026 19:36

Aw Joan, so sorry to hear this!

Get yourself a blanket, fill a hot water bottle and put in your bed to warm it up.

As AG says, phone an engineer regardless of what it cost, you cannot be without heating.

Im really sorry to hear you are suffering and on your own it can feel 10 times worse.

Glad you are coming on here though to chat with us. Im on & off during the evening and sure there will always be someone to chat to and let off some steam to make u feel better.

Hope you manage to get hold of someone or your daughter and get the heating sorted. It may be as simple as letting out some air in the radiator and takes just a few minutes.

THANKYOU Ann & Florence.
I have heat, that lovely friend of daughters & her hubbys came over & fixed the problem, it's a temporary job but he's happy for me to use it as normal.

It needs a new zone valve, & something needed in the boiler but obviously he didn't have any new ones in his van,
He's an elecrician by trade but experienced with plumbing, he's a great guy, so kin,. his wife is jut the same.

I feel better for him being here & warmer.

I'm so glad you've got it sorted, Joan.
Kind neighbours are invaluable.

The News footage of the snow in Aberdeenshire is frightful.
I've got off very lightly here, in spite of my moaning!

Amokavid Report 7 Jan 2026 09:59

Morning everyone.
I never thought I would be getting out of bed this morning after having the problem with the heating last night. I am so grateful to daughters friend.
I was in an awful state worrying abou it & wept thinking about how cold it was going to be. Being on my own now has changed me completely I'm really nervous nowadays & cry at the drop of a hat & fret about everything.

However,l what a difference when I opened the curtains today, I can see much of the garden after not seeeing anything outside for days.
The planters & plants are in view !

It was windy during the night & this has obviously helped rid the heaps of snow off the house etc there are a lot of big puddles around but who cares about puddles.
The large heaps of snow shifted by the plough are likely to be around for a while but the house road itself "should" be accessible?

Thanks for taking the time to reply to the thread last night, it was appreciated.
Hope you are all ok & the weather is kind !

Joan.

So pleased to see that you have a more pleasant day to look forward to, Joan.
It's great that your family's friend could help you out and keep you warm <3

We have bright sunshine, this morning and a temperature that is not minus :-0
So far, although very cold, we have escaped the worst of the weather, although I know the snow has been quite close.
It's not one of my school days, so I don't have need to be out today.

Keep warm and safe everyone.

I am glad that you managed to get your heating going again Joan, even if it is a temporary fix. Hopefully the electrician can get the parts soon.
It is a bit warmer here as well, a dizzy three degrees. OH has double jumpers and gone into the garage to potter.
I have to go into the school for reading this afternoon, so I will see what germs the children are passing on this week :-(
