Morning Maddie, Von and Everyone. :-D :-D :-D <3 <3 <3

You know that song, 'What a difference a day makes, 24 little hours ....' - well, it is so right! Yesterday was a lovely, sunny, warm day. Today it is pouring down and I had the heating on first thing.

Done the watering in the greenhouse but none was necessary for the patio tubs. The plants look healthy so I shall get more of the same (yellow tomatoes, my fave, and bright red geraniums) and perhaps see what else they have on Tuesday when I pass that way again. I am really enjoying growing things so a bit of my paternal uncle must have got into my blood - he had a huge garden, an allotment and also looked after the very swish garden of an elderly lady in a nearby village. (Castle Eden for those who wish to look it up.)

Dad kept his garden tidy and grew only a few things given to him by his brother.

On the plus side, he knew loads of poetry as (in the days when teachers were more autonomous), when the boys went to gardening class, his teacher knew Dad hated it so let him stay behind and read as long as, at the end of the lesson, Dad could recite a poem when the class returned.

He used to keep us entertained when we were children --- Beware the jabberwock, my son ...... and Behold, a windmill am I, aloft here in my tower - are two I can remember from childhood.

Who remembers the first poem they learned at school? 'Someone came knocking at my wee small door' was my first.

Just realised that Grandson 2 is spending time at Hong Kong University - part of his course, I think. I shall eat my hat if he settles down quickly! Grandson 1 is happily ensconced at home - as Son says, they have made life easy for him there!

BH, I have written a screed - you can see I like words, whether poetry or set to music. I let my fingers do the talking. :-0

Enjoy your day folks. :-D <3

Joy I studied the metaphysical poets for A level. Afraid it went over my head but

maybe if I read them now I might have a better understanding ;-)

Funnily enough when we did shadows at my art club I wrote Robert Louis Stevenson’s

poem “My shadow” as part of the image. :-)

Hi Belle, Fly and lovely Elizabeth. :-D <3

I hope you have a peaceful day too. <3

Von, I had to look up metaphysical poets and the only one I had heard of was John Donne - but I have two books of poetry and in one of these (English Verse) I found Marvell's Bermudas, To His Coy Mistress, The Definition of Love, The Garden and The Kingfisher. In that book also was Donne's The Good-Morrow, Lovers Infinitenesse, Song, S Nocturnall Upon St Lucies Day and more.

I found Donne and Herbert in my other poetry book (The New Oxford Book Of English Verse) too, Von.

I shall now have to read the poems.

Once upon a time I used to read a lot from both books - always fond of the written word!

Walter de la Mare wrote, 'Someone came knocking', by the way but I can not remember the poem's proper name even though I can still recite it. It was something like 'The Stranger' or 'The Traveller' or 'The Whisperer' I think. Edit: I was wrong, it was Someone!

And now for something completely different :-D

I have finished the latest Shetland book - it was strange and completely unexpected. Roll on the next Vera!

Afternoon everyone :-) <3

Definitely the Learning Thread today ;-)

The first poem I recall having to learn at primary school was 'Silver' by Walter de la Mare.
'Slowly, silently now the moon
Walks the night in a silver shoon.'.........

I was probably about 8 or 9 then.

A bit of a dull start to the day, but dry.
It's now really sunny and about 17 degrees.

Maddie
Your choice of plants sounds great.
It will be a lovely colourful display :-D

You never forget, do you Gwyn?

Mine was in Infants' School and I had only just moved to that part of the UK - perhaps that's why it stuck!

Off to sort out some dinner, so ni night to one and all.

May not be around much tomorrow as I think it is the coffee Monday after dance class but I hope you all have a good day.
