Grace Jones slapping Russell Harty live on air in 1981 has been named the most shocking TV chat show moment of all time in a survey of 2,000 TV viewers. Well what a thing to be remembered for besides being remembered as not such a BIG talent Grace Jones deserves this most shocking Russell Harty was such a lovely person how anyone can do such a disgustingly nasty thing as that :-( This is the Top Ten according to 2,000 TV Viewers some brings back memories. 1. Grace Jones on Russell Harty (1981) Grace Jones slapped Russell Harty across the face after the presenter turned his back on her to speak to the other guests on the programme. She said she was being ignored. 2. David Icke on Wogan (1991) Sports presenter and former footballer David Icke pronounced himself the 'son of Godhead' to Terry Wogan. 3. Meg Ryan on Parkinson (2003) The Hollywood actress, who was promoting her new film In the Cut, became monosyllabic when answering Parkinson's questions. She ignored her fellow guests, fashion gurus Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine. The interview made global headlines. 4. Tara Palmer Tomkinson on Frank Skinner (1999) The socialite made a disjointed appearance on the Frank Skinner show. Within 48 hours, she was packed off to an exclusive addiction clinic in Arizona. 5. Bee Gees on Clive Anderson's All Talk (1997) The three brothers told Anderson they had once-toyed with the idea of calling themselves Les Tosseurs. Anderson quipped: 'You've always been tossers to me.' They stormed off the show. 6. The Sex Pistols on Bill Grundy (1976) The Sex Pistols made front-page news following their foul-mouthed appearance on the Today television show hosted by Bill Grundy. 7. George Best on Wogan (1991) Best appeared on the nightly chat show having got drunk first in the green room. 8. Matthew Kelly on Frank Skinner (2003) Matthew Kelly used his appearance on the Frank Skinner show to confront the host over his 'horrible' jokes about Kelly's arrest over a sex abuse allegation for which he was later fully cleared by police. 9. Tom Cruise on Oprah (2005) The Hollywood star took centre stage on Oprah, by jumping up and down on the sofa, throwing his hands in the air and yelling about his feelings for new love Katie Holmes. 10. Rod Hull and Emu on Parkinson (1976) Rod Hull's hand puppet Emu was launched into an unprovoked and sustained attack on Michael Parkinson, knocking him off his chair and leaving him dishevelled and disorientated Pat x

Hi Pat I've seen the whole ten at one time or another, some of them cringe worthy, some embarassing and some just downright laughable! The Grace Jones one, not sure I'd put at the top, she made more a fool of herself than she ever did Russel Harty. For me, I have to say I enjoyed watching Matthew Kelly making smarmy Frank Skinner positively squirm, after Skinner tried to joke his way out of it, but Kelly kept on until he got an apology. Good on him! Christine

Hi Christine :-) Well I know what you mean & yes that was brilliant piece of work by Mr Kelly & well deserved tearing apart of Skinner. Like you I remember lots of these TV moments but still remember Grace Jones slapping Russell Harty a person who always came across as a gentile & pleasant person, unlike Jamaica's female Tyson, even Jamaicans ignore any talk of her, who would blame them :-((( Do you feel old? remembering the Sex Pistols on Grundy like it was yesterday made me feel that way lol. Hi Pat Funnily enough I never saw the Grace Jones incident, only heard about it but when it's mentioned I always know what people are talking about. As for the Matthew Kelly one all I can say is well done him. Juliexx

I can't believe Oliver Reed didn't feature in the list somewhere, Pat! LOL And Mick Jagger's done a few monosyllabic interviews in his time too. CB >|< X

Deanna

Deanna Report 23 Jan 2006 10:44

I remeber Oliver Reed. It was midnight show, can't remember what it was called. The booze was all around him, they sat and chatted while drinking..... they all drank. Then Oliver kissed a gay woman on the lips, and she went 'Crackers'. I am sure I would not have been too pleased at a drunk kissing me uninvited either. He was asked to leave. He left without a complaint, it has to be said. Deanna X Was it called 'After Hours'?

yes, I remember the Clive Anderson one with the Bee Gees. It was a bit of a stupid throwaway remark from Clive Anderson that possibly went a bit too far, but I got the impression that the Gibb brothers went on expecting their egos to be pampered and got a bit of a shock.

Hi Julie, I am surprised you have managed to miss that I am sure it's been shown 1,000's of times. Hi Dave yes Oliver Reed was drunk a few times on TV I remember him being like that. I suppose the point is it wasn't so memorable as George when he was naughty on Wogan, maybe we expect some things from some but not from others. Dee must have missed that but I am glad I did don't think that would have been very memorable except for being disgusting. Funny the more you think about it the more stuff you can bring to mind Pat x

Jean Durant Report 23 Jan 2006 12:26

Hi Pat, Never saw the Clive Anderson remark but think it is hysterical. Where on earth was their collective sense of humour? I like the Bee Gees but still find the retort funny. The one I still think was the most embarrassing (most probably because he was my first love) was Parky interviewing Robert Mitchum. Mitchum was notorious for being closed mouthed and hated being interviewed but he excelled himself that time. Still loved him though LOL Jean x.

Wasn't Rita Hayworth interviewed by Terry or Parkinson and sat there saying...nothing...for the length of the interview? Does anyone remember? BC XX

Pat Report 23 Jan 2006 13:26

Hi CB I am just thinking about this & wonder is it the media that reminds us of some these chat show incidences so often & conveniently forget others :-( Just a thought. Oh I can't remember Mick Jagger at all lol. Julie Anne, what a tragedy the day some great Comedy died was when Tommy pass on. Hi Deanna, I remember when Shelley Winters threw her drink over Oliver Reed on an American Chat Show, he could be real nasty when drunk. Shelley would be just the person not to let him away with what was a sexist remark. Pat x

I remember David Blaine being 'interviewed' by Eammon Holmes on GMTV about 3 years ago, Blaine didn't say a word, he just sat there pulling scary faces at Eammon................strange man.

Jean, I remember the Robert Mitchum one, I think the most he said was 'Yup' and 'Nope'! Poor Parky was struggling. LOL Christine

Pat

Pat Report 23 Jan 2006 13:48

Christine I can' recall Anne Bancroft being interviewed. Andy I agree with you but it's very Clive Anderson isn't it? that annoys me about him as if he is trying to be clever with it :-( Jean Dorothy and Christine I think anyone who saw the Robert Mitchum interview can easily remember it I think Parky has shown it a few times since. I think it was the only interview Parky had done where all he got was yep and nope lol. I think Parky said to Mitchum do you have anymore to say and he says nope :-) think its down as the most frustrating of interviews. Dorothy I remember John Wayne interview I think he lost a lot of fans after all that gibberish. BC I can't remember Rita Hayworth being interviewed. I was big into old films and the stars so if I saw it I would remember I would have thought :-( Pat x

Pat, Yeah I don't know whether Clive Anderson's chat show manner is an act or whether he does just like the sound of his own voice. Mind you he was a lawyer so I've probably just answered my own question lol. That said, I don't dislike him and absolutely loved 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' where his motormouth quips were right at home.
