Nicola, have you tried the libraries in the area in which your grandparents were born? That may well have a genealogy department. I get all my records for my husbands family from the library in Leitrim. It may even be a central office, I do not know, but you could try yours first. If you need the address of the Leitrim one, I will give you it. Deanna

Thanks for all of your comments and help. It really is appreciated as it helps me try to solve the mystery..... The lady that helped to try and find the marriage cert for me was : [email protected] She lives in Ireland and goes to the Dublin records office weekly - she does charge but it was reasonable (even though I didn't find what I wanted!). Bye for now, Nicola

Here are some other sites that I have used: cyndlist and GENUKI - go into Ireland, then spend hours/days/weeks roaming around! rootsweb mailing lists for counties and surnames for Ireland rootsweb irelandoldnews scripts.ireland irishgenealogy.ie irishroots.net ni_towns.tripod usrs.on.net/~proformat/irlnamesL ireland.anglican.org/library/libroots nli.ie/family_hr.htm#com from-ireland.net/contents ulsterancestry proni.gov.uk/ulstercovenantsearch I haven't used them all recently, so hope they still exist! I do have some more sites but for specific counties. By the way, if you google search for Ulster Covenant, you will find its site, which I find fascinating - in it: 'The archive of the Ulster Unionist Council, held by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), contains just under half a million original signatures and addresses of the men who, on 28 September 1912, signed the Ulster Covenant, and of the women who signed the parallel Declaration. In total, the Covenant was signed by 237,368 men, and the Declaration by 234,046 women.'. It brings history alive for me to see their signatures. Joy

Although beyond the timescale of your Trainor/Hillen marriage, in 1884 or 1885, an Alexander Hillen married a Sarah Traynor in the Londonderry area.

hi, i know how you feel i have been stuck on my g-g-grandfather for about a year he was born in ireland and went to india with the army then got discharged over there and went to Austrilia where he married and lived out his years. As far as i no he was born in 1838 near county Armagh. So as i was stuck i thought i would start on his wifes family and guess what her mother was irish so im at a dead end.

Although Trainor/Traynor appears in various parts of Ireland, in the Primary Valuation property survey of 1848-64, the only occurence of the surnames Trainor and Hillen in the same area is in Belfast city. For Traynor and Hillen, these appear together in Belfast City, Armagh and Down. Hope this is of help. The name Hillen on it's own only appears in Antrim, Armagh, Belfast city and Down (ie does not appear in Southern part of Ireland).

Hi I am also stuck with my Irish side of the family. My g g grandparents - I got there names from their son's wedding certificate (he married in Scotland) JOHN DURKAN and CATHERINE CLARK. The only thing I know about them is that they were from Mayo. Joy I would appreciate the name of the man who helped you trace a wedding certificate. Anne

If anyone can help with Irish rellies I woul be very grateful. I have Mary Ann Thornburry listed as being born 1851 Kilkenny on all census returns. I cannot find a birth record. I have now found a marriage for Nov 1870 and have the certificate with her father named as Thomas Thornberry. If anyone has magical powers, please use them!! Many thanks, Jacky :-)
